Is it ever really necessary to install a lift?

I did full King's/UCAs/Deavers, etc w/ 285/75/16 KO2 (33") tires, but I agree that stock OR is so capable that you're not going to see a significant increase in capability over stock until you go to 35" + tires, which really requires re-gearing, CMC and lift to make work.

At that point you're on the slippery slope, are $10k in mods and might as well have bought a different vehicle altogether for the intended purpose.

But to each their own. I did my lift moreso for aesthetics than capability increase anyway

This response hits my question, and why I was looking at this thread exactly. My biggest clearance issue is the rear differential and a lift isn't going to help that. I just went from 32" to 33" tires on my wife's Ram and made already poor fuel economy much worse. I love my Tacoma the way it is, I'll just add armor to the bottom. Plus everyone I know with a lifted Tacoma is just for show.

Just as a counterpoint, most of my clearance issues were based on rocks around the vehicle not under it, mainly at rocker height, so for me a lift made sense. Gives me a little more wiggle room when you are turning around a jagged rock, ect A lot of the trails I am on tend to be more V shaped that rock garden-y

dunno about you but some of the trails around here get pretty sketchy in a stock truck, not saying you need a lift but its nice to have especially when it comes to water crossings and mud holes.

HAHA that looks so stupid. From 1999-2003 I worked at a Toyota dealership. My team leader's brother had a 80s/early 90s Toyota pickup that was lifted beyond belief, with the entire underside chromed out, and massive tires. It looked like a compact monster truck. I don't even know how he got in or out of it, it was so high. You could hear the tires howling on the road long before he arrived. And you knew it was him coming every time. I wish I had a picture of it. I never understood how that little 4cyl, or 3.0 V6 powered it.

    Like, so many.
Does it though? I thought we determined that it doesn't.
