i've heard from a buddy that it's illegal to have more than 3 pairs of lights on at the same time. so that accounts for low beams, fog lights, and the corner lights. that's why i assumed they programmed it so when you activate your headlights when your foglights are on, the fogs turn off.

True, it originally started out they wanted to not allow for driving lights to be on with low beams because of the number and lumens towards other drivers in the event the drivers forget to turn them off approaching traffic. The laws were never changed and so they have kept it that way for all Manufactured vehicles since. As for law enforcement, it’s not that big of a deal unless guys are screwing around. It’s an EXPENSIVE ticket if you use them on the roadway but having them uncovered is just a “fix-it” ticket. Using them on the roadway is a moving violation with points. I have my light bar connected to my high beam switch and the driving/fog lights stay on even while high beams are on. Makes it easier to turn on/off for approaching traffic fast when out in the sticks avoiding deer and critters! When off, the LED backlights on the Rigid bar stay lit. I have heard the fog lights with high beams is illegal. It does seem kinda silly to me because if you are in a situation that warrants high beams there should be zero oncoming traffic so it wouldn't matter if your fog lights were on. I believe the reason they do is though is so your eyes are concentrated on the light farther down the road. Our eyes are always looking at the brighter objects at night. So you would want your brightest possible amount of light farthest down the road and less foreground lighting in front of your truck.

Read the law and then ask your state inspection station for clarification.

Based on 22.05, it sound like it may be fine as long as high beams are necessary (22.05.1), although 22.05.3 makes it sound like fog lights are only allowed when absolutely necessary (depending if fog lights are considered auxiliary).

It ties into the federal guidelines which is why vehicles sold in the US have fog lights functioning in the manner they do. But you can see by the vast number of vehicles in MA driving around with fog lights on that it isn’t really ever enforced the way that obnoxious light bars and ultra bright unaimed off-road lights that fit into fog pockets are.

    No that’s not illegal

fog lights do not need to pass MA state inspection anymore. They don’t even get checked.

I will politely disagree. Being someone that lived out of town and had to drive secondary roads (not back to gravel road) home at midnight having both on is better went then just HB. If you don’t have ditch lights the extra light helps with animals. Also useful for early morning highways and night driving if you live north of 60 and even north of the 49th.

That’s not true. I wish I could. Fogs really help low side spill to spot deer. I use my ditch lights sometimes. I live out of town off narrow roads with few cars and lots of deer. At the right time of year I’ll see 6-10 on the way home daily.

Could be worse...... you could live in Commi California. Failure to din your high beams $425 2pts, if you run up on another vehicle and are following another car failing to dim, yup, another $425 and another 2 pets on same ticket. Don’t worry though, you can go to court and request dismissal and traffic school. That will require you to still pay the fine, spend all day in traffic school, pay $110 for the school, but your points are removed. No, seriously.... the traffic fines are not the bad part, California court fee penalty assessments are $30 for every $10 of the fine. Don’t believe me, look it up, it’s crazy.

Thank you for posting this, around here (KY), all the snowflake racers (Dodge neon racecars) seem like they are outfitting with this and running around with it on all the time. Sometimes I just want to follow and tell them just how stupid it looks, but as I get older, I just shake my cane at the young whippersnappers and keep them off my lawn. BLUF, it looks stupid AF (not Air Force) and even worse, at night with wet streets, it's straight up dangerous.

You would be surprised. Lots of people who don’t fix things the right way or even close. You know there are a bunch of people driving around with a fuel line connected directly to a portable gas tank. Probably one or two guys with a fish tank in the back seat.
