Reading 101... Blue T said A-TRAC would have been the cure for going downhill, in his sad try at humor. I am about facts boys, and I responded (for those who don't know or think Blue T is an authority on A-TRAC) that A-TRAC is a traction system that would help CLIMBING, not descending. If you think mis-information should be rewarded, then whatever... for those who actualy want to know how it works or when you would use it... see my posts, PM me or just ask... I post here to help others not to make up lies.

Why education and repeating posts is needed...

A-TRAC doesn't 'constantly' work... ONLY if a tire looses traction (in the air, over slippery surface, etc. does the system breifly brake that tire so power transfers to the opposite tire.

Going downhill, you sure don't want to be using your brake when it is important to not let a tire slide and have you go sideways! The downhill assist system or just low range, first gear... roll the tires slowly, very slowly!

A stock FJ is quite a bit more capable of a climb like that than a stock Tacoma (4:1 low range). So, I don't think they are crazy, but they have more nutz than I do.

I understand how the system works, as one tire looses traction the brakes pulsate slowing that wheel down. If traction was low enough it would be working constantly. Your repeated posts really are not necessary. Also my reading comp is fine, that is how I was able to understand what BlueT meant, obviously yours is not so great. He was clearly trying to get at what would happen if your brakes overheat on the way up.

I prefer trailing with bald tires (no secret there) no brakes & a stuck accelerator, keeps things interesting...:eek:

It has nothing to do with the vehicle and 100% to do with the driver. I did this back in the late '80's in a '84 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 4" lift and 33's. If you know what the hell you're doing you could do it in anything.(assuming you know how to use your low gearing and don't get heavy on the brake coming down)

Last time I was in Moab in my Jeep it was "open" but private('07 or '08). We didn't pay to go do it as there are way too many options out there without having to pay.

I searched but couldn't find if anyone ever saw that guy do Lion's Back in a Crown Vic? All this stuff about A Trac and stuff kinda went moot after seeing a 95 Ford sedan do quite well there:D

Thanks for posting that. It has nothing to do with some magical powers that the A trac has. If you know how to drive you can make it up it no problem.

Slick rock is all about good traction and not being heavy on the gas or brake.

It seems you are the one that should educate yourself
at 1:58 notice Ford rolling backwards despite trying to go forward. If he had on reverse even with 4L he would be rolling down the hill not slowed by the 4low crawling. Anybody who had to descent iced or loose gravel hill knows this. Especially ice up hill, you do not want to touch brakes on that. Next time when grown ups are talking either listen or get out of the mall's parking lot and try things.
