^^ This is the answer. It’s obvious now that you point it out.

It's like the Smittybilt rear tube bumper that came with my 88 4runner. Hung a good 4" lower than stock, my buddies called it "the trail rake".

That one looks pretty good. They recessed the vertical part and curved it back towards grill. Nice. And able to support winch.

I'm in the market for a good brush guard that will help to protect the front of my truck from collisions with deer.

Ranch Hand brand guards are popular in my area but I'm not too sure how well my sonar will work with all the metal mesh in front of the guard.

Everybody on here is going to hammer that you need an arb bumper. I think that a normal brush guard probably won't do much for you. If you can find one that supports a winch you are going to be farther ahead. The mounting hardware is much stronger. Mine is attached to fish plates bolted to the frame. Everything that the winch bolts to, on back to the frame is 1/4" plate. The brush hoop is then attached to that frame with 6 grade 5 bolts at 3/8" .

What sucks about those is they create more damage. If you run into something (low speed) on the drivers side it smashes into the whole front end. Without it, you would just have damage on the drivers side.

Or, if you hit something just in the middle you smash out your two headlights (and your foglights).

So what do the people who mount these (which must be someone or they wouldn’t sell them) hope to achieve. Are they being bamboozled or are they simply doing it for looks.

Well I think they’re truly brush guards for off road and on farms. Anything beyond that like a small or large animal will bend or break the guard into your front end, imho
