That’s not true on the 3.5. Max power is at 6000rpm based on the dyno sheets. Power falls off at 6100 but I expect the limiter causes that, because the identical engine in the Lexus hits peak power even higher.

I have the '16 RX350-is mine that Lexus engine you mentioned? Yeah I think it's at 6300RPMs. But I will never push it that hard. Not necessary. Plenty of power to play with without having to go near that:)
My 3.4 in the Tacoma maxes HP at 4800RPMs and I had that in mind when I said what I said-my bad.

I'll throw my 2 cents in here.
Today's technology across the board, most vehicles are equipped with a fuel shutoff at the top end of the red line.

With that being said, all newer vehicles are equipped with fuel shutoff to prevent damage while upshifting. (Mostly due to missed shifts).
However...you can still damage the engine/trans when down shifting. Say shifting down into 2nd gear while doing 90. Since no fuel is being used, there's no reason the engine management system would need to shut it off.

Unlike paddle shifted cars in which the management system will not allow you to down shift unless the speed is low enough to prevent damage to the engine/trans.

Auto trans probably has a similar management system while in neutral with the fuel shutoff. And also not allowing the trans to be shifted into 1st or 2nd unless the engine/trans can handle that high of rpm.

Can only imagine someone who 'needs' to constantly stomp the gas for basic road maneuvers drives like an asshole. This is a non-issue when you don't feel the need to overtake every car near you.

It won't break it to do it, but there is incremental wear that will cause the engine and transmission to wear out earlier.

Like I said this engine can not hit true redline. The rev limiter kicks in way before. And that article is BS.
Here’s the definition of a rev limiter
“A limiter prevents a vehicle's engine from being pushed beyond the manufacturer's limit known as the redline (literally the red line marked on the tachometer). At some point BEYOND the redline, engine damage will occur.”

Now I know the manufacturers don’t mark the tach with a true redline. That is not good engineering. We engineers use factors of safety for everything, but for the sake of argument we can say the end of the red zone is redline.

Think of the towing limit on our trucks. 6300lbs ish. It’s totally fine to tow 6300lbs just not to go over that. Now we can easily load more weight into the truck above that limit the manufacturer set and be fine, but let’s assume the truck will self destruct shortly after that 6300lbs. If we don’t have a weight limiter you would destroy your truck if you added more weight. However if you installed a “weight limiter” that didn’t allow you load anymore than exactly 6300lbs you’d be totally fine because if you tried to add more weight the weight would just disappear and stay at 6300 lol. Just like a rev limiter limits the revs far below the true redline.

I'll put it like this. In 2000 my sister bought a new WS6 Trans am. In 2001 I bought a new Trans Am also. Mine, which I still own, was a toy car from the get go, used for autoX, track days (HPDE), Texas Mile events, etc. Hers was rarely driven hard beyond the occasional highway onramp for fun, and typical needs in traffic. Hers was sold at 198k miles, and the valve covers had never been off. Mine spun a rod bearing on a road course at 34k miles.

The load on bearings goes up exponentially with RPM. Less is better for longevity.

Okay okay, so we're all agreed you can bounce off the redline, but how do you guys feel about yellow line?

Nope, no good. Turning a BMW on is bad for the engine. Proceed straight to the dealer's garage.

It's impossible to over-rev most modern cars short of down shifting a manual too far.

Most of this test was right around redline pulling over 5000 lbs. These are designed to do this. Hitting the redline unloaded once or twice a day will have 0 effect on any long term reliability.
