I’ve pulled another Tacoma out of a snow ditch with a climbing rope around the hitch ball it worked fine. Obviously it was an old clinking rope I don’t climb on anymore

I hope you did this on your way out

    :burnrubber::luvya:

Many cars with no obvious tow point will have a little plastic panel that you can pop off with a screw driver, behind that is a place to thread in a 5/8" or 3/4" eye bolt that you can hook up to.

Screw the tow point into his bumper and attach a D ring to it with a snatch strap and pull him out. Not much to attach to on newer cars other than the factory spots.

My niece got stuck in my yard. She couldn’t find her factory tow bolt. So I run a strap through her rear tire and pulled her out sideways.

    No damage done

I come ski country and got my license in 75 . We all had rear wheel drive cars and a lot of us had recap tires . Pulling people out was normal . Every car and truck had jumpers and every truck had a chain .

If anyone thinks that using a tow ball is fine, you should take some time to educate yourself on safe vehicle recovery practices.

Hey- get a Pull-Pal - sounds like your rig needs one too .

And another good thing to carry - The one time I really could have used one I did not have one, so now I also carry an AED, especially since I see so many accidents and older retired types on the backroads out here.

yep. I still carry both at minimum, I switched to strap years ago, but my plow truck has a chain. Just have to make sure its a good spot to put the chain or strap. and not just hit the pedal.

Good thread. I don't pull people out on main roads and highways anymore either. The way people drive in the snow in Colorado is just amazing. Presidents Day trip was interesting for sure. Started at my place with 5+ inches and lucky where we were going had only a dusting. I think we counted 14 vehicles off the road heading down to the trail (1.5 hour drive). For the life of me, I just can't figure out why it is so hard to navigate in the snow?

    snowjeep.jpg

OP, check with your state laws on vehicle recovery, and let me explain:

    - Some states, it is illegal to hook to someone and attempt to pull out. Colorado be one of those states, and I agree with it. When a tow truck is called to a main highway, Colorado Highway Patrol assists. This blocks traffic, makes the extraction a whole lot safer. I was almost issued a ticket for attempting to pull a truck that slid off one of our main highways in CO.

    - If a vehicle is damaged during extraction, your insurance may not pay, yet still responsible for the damage caused. The last 4x4 club I was apart of, being able to recover or be out in severe weather (we would take doctors and nurses to and from hospital during blizzards), we had to have insurance wavers and liability releases so the Club (llc) was not sued. It almost happened one year, and we changed our policies, and we covered the damage that was "claimed" we did. Something to think about. I was the treasurer and believe the damage estimate was 1900.00+.

The last time I hooked to someone on the main roads was in Dec 2006. I remember that one specifically due to ripping off an Avalanche 1500 rear bumper and all associated plastic. The guy was out trying to plow, and somehow got his dumb ass on top of the deep snow and dropped down. That damn thing was stuck. I did suggest he try and disconnect the plow and he said "just pull me out." I gave him several good tugs with my 2005 Dodge 2500 that was chained up. He said to really yank it. I gave it the "onion" with 40lbs of boost and removed the rear bumper for him. I just kept driving and dropped his bumper off at the end of the road. Last time for this guy. I bet that was expensive to repair. I would always let the person hook to their vehicle. obviously he did it wrong.

Now don't get me wrong, on remote roads, and definitely during off-roading trails I pull people all the time. Hell, I took the rope to pull me off some boulders on Presidents Day, and I returned the favor to the guy I was with when his ARB quit working. It's all situational for me.

What kind of AED do you carry? I’ve considered one for camping trips. But, I’ve probably only shocked one dude on the side of the road during my career.

I have a Phillips Heartstart. They’re not cheap and the pads have a shelf life of two years. I bought it as I volunteer summers at my kid’s camp as their medic so they let us stay there for a couple weeks including free (private) room and board - definitely a good deal as you should see the camp!

I can now see why it is illegal to pull stuck people out in some states after that video .

I've idled by great multitudes of cars stuck on the beach in my Jeep. People would ask me to help them out, I'd tell them...no tow strap.

Never bought one for fear of messing someones car up.

You really need more than a single strap.

That's way beyond a Jeep with a tow strap.
