In that case, it's your truck. Outfit it however you want. At the end of the day, you're the one driving it so you need to make sure you're happy with it. Anyone who tells you otherwise can go fuck a cactus...

Oh and welcome to TW :D

There is only one time my 03 Peerunner w/locker has been beaten, and it was a trail that a even a Samurai was struggling on. Granted, I was struggling way harder than he was. The best part about my 2wd is that it had made me a much smarter driver knowing I can't just 4x4 my way out of everything.

Airing down, locker, and knowing when to call it have been a good combo for me the 5 years I've had this truck

We 2WD folk are much classier than you 4WD peasants :hattip: JK but yea you do have to think a bit more about what you're doing. I don't like to be the guy that says a locked 2wd and a good driver will go just as far as a 4x4

There have definitely been sometimes I have been sitting on the sidelines watching stock Cherokees and 4runners blast up sections I could only dream of doing. The hardest part of having a 2wd was saying "Hey stupid, you are about to be stupid, don't be stupid" while facing a rocky hill section or water crossing. As long as you know your limits, you're g2g

Yup. Better to sit it out and not break anything for the sake of saying you did it than to just go for it. Live to wheel another day I guess. I was dumb enough that when a group of us went out onto an overgrown golf course and everyone went through a giant sand pit (in 4WD) I could have easily gone around and carried on but I made a dumb choice and decided to go through it and ended up burrying Half of my back tires. Had it not been for a single tie down we would've been busted by police for trespassing

have you went to the southern California subforum here? Check out the thread "trails for 2wd" and also gold fever trail thread I started. That's a fun one up in big bear especially if you have a family going along.

ive been on the socal forum here and there, mostly wheelers anonymous and 805 threads. I checked out that gold fever trail and that looks like a great trail. Its about 2 1/2 hours form where i am so its for sure doable. Ill have to start planning an outing in the near future, hopefully with some more people as im still new at this new offroading thing :D

Thanks! It was a blast! This was all up in Big Bear. I have the trail marked but id be easier to email you a gpx file than post it here. It would only a a screenshot of the tracks which wont help much. But let me know if you want them ill see what i can do

I converted my truck to 4x4 for $950 if you look around for a bit you can find some pretty cheap parts

I wouldn't go so far as to say that a locked 2wd will do anything a 4x4 will do, but I will say that the best off-road mod you can do to your 2wd to make it more capable is a rear locker, hands down.

There could very well be situations where a locked 2wd will hop over with more ease than an open diff 4x4, but a lot of that also has to do with the capability of the driver.

Agreed. My 2 nickels to the OP: go for it! Go light on the weight where you can and invest in a good winch and learn. Hell, its your rig and we aint here long. Enjoy the build and the pages of research that goes into building and learning along the way.

    Good luck and post pics!

Heading this way too Chase. Trying to compare vs. Maxtraxx/TREX/etc. But I know they would have saved my ass from getting stuck at my Dads ranch near a creek bottom (tons of loose sand, should have known better). His F250 had to bail me out..you can imagine the dinner stories now.. :argue:

Nice setup! What lift do you have? Also, what are your wheels and tires? Are those 15s?
