Is it possible 2nd gen owners will be just as annoying here as they are in the 3rd gen forum?

Correct, I had a 1990s FIVE speed auto paired with the 4.0l. Not a bad combo but clearly out of date. The air injection on that motor amused me and brought back distinct memories of me ripping a similar system off my 1974 Mercury Capri.

I mentioned the four speed since I test drove the 2.7l auto (no stick available) first and it was such an anemic turd that I cut short the test drive and gave up. Salesman, out of desperation to save his sale, brought out a V6 which worked and I bought that truck.

I don't know how anyone can defend that 2.7l boat anchor. Brought back vivid memories of my 2 3l Pinto wagon 4spd 1977. Slower than dog crap, groaned and moaned, but dead nuts reliable. It's redeeming value was that I paid $50 for it - no such redemption for a new 2.7l in 2014.

Good riddance to that garbage and I look forward to test driving the 2024!

P.S. @watermelonman I'm proud GenX! I was around for ALL gens of Toyota trucks and I have distinct fond memories of the "Toyota truck" (not Tacoma) with a 4 cylinder stick, that's what I was looking for in 2014. That 2nd gen pig in no way resembled what I remembered and wanted. 2024 promises to be the best truck ever made, quit yer whining everybody.

2nd objectively the worst gen in terms of reliability. Frames that melt, boat anchor of an engine, yellowing headlights, failed engine mounts.

No no no, see 1G is anM1 Abraham’s, torque monster. The 2G is a itty bitty Lawn mower engine.

Just ask a very secure in their purchase 2nd gen guy and he’ll confirm.

it’s not 1980’s. 1980’s is 22R (more efficient), solid axles, swivel hubs, manual locking hubs, normally designed TOB
    (better)

hmmmmm... The only chrome in my 2014 interior is around the shift quadrant/gate opening. It must have come with the rare optional: "Rediculous Chrome Interior Delete Package". :notsure:

Just rolled 80K miles on my '13.
Happy with my 2nd Gen, don't know what all the fuss is about. Just drove it across the country and back.

Be sure and look around on the various websites to see what like configured 2011 Tacomas are going for. Don’t let the insurance company short change you.

Then prepare yourself for what new trucks are going for.

Oof don't remind me. I did only could find one similar match and off road model like mine on auto trader. But it was 12,000 miles less then mine they wanted 19,8 for it and I got offered 17,600 to total it about 5,000 less to salvage. I really don't want to total but I do think the engine is fine and so is the frame but won't know definitive till pull the radiator which wouldn't know till after I salvage which sucks I loved that truck I really dig the 2024 TRD pro look but just concerned about all the new stuff and potential issues especially with the hybrid motor. But love the truck and look

My 2nd gen has been nothing but reliable. Plenty of complaints though. Harsh ride, thrashy and oftentimes underpowered engine, outdated interior, etc. I bought my gen 2 around the time the Gen 3's were just coming out. I tested a gen 3 and while I preferred the interior and creature comforts, the 3.5 was a dog under 4,000 RPM. I opted for a barely used gen 2. I am open to the new gen 4 as my next truck. Trying to decide between that and a Tundra. 2 small kids now so I need to see how the backseat is on the new Tacos before I even consider one.

Before my gen 2 I owned a gen 1 for 8 years and it was also super reliable. The downsides of the gen 1 were similar to the downside of the gen 2. With Toyota trucks I have always tolerated superficial inadequacies in hope that reliability would make up for it. For me it has. To be honest though, seeing more gen 3 Tundra engine failures that I would like to see (yes, I know the internet is where all those blown engines end up, it still seems like a lot on the Tundra forums/Facebook pages though). So, I will wait and see how the new 2.4 is. I am not anti-turbo but I like to let others be the guinea pigs.

I am in same.boat which is why I hate to have to be looking for a new truck now. I hate being at the beginning of a generation. Just waiting on more details and people to get hands on the truck.

Is it just me or did this thread bring out the 3rd gen owners obnoxiously hyping their 3rd gens?

    Harsh ride.
    Underpowered.
    Uncomfortable.
    No soft features.
