It's a problem when you don't use it much and it seizes....

The click noise is the pawl engaging or disengaging in the transmission while the drivetrain is still under load supporting the weight of the truck. Try the procedure I described above and see if it goes away.

Resting the weight of the truck on the transmission pawl can cause premature failure of the pawl. That can occur by not using the parking brake at all, or by using the parking brake, but only engaging the parking brake after the weight of the truck is already resting on the pawl.

In other words, you don’t want to stop the truck on a hill, put it in park and take your foot off the floor brake (thereby resting the weight of the truck on the pawl), and then engage the parking brake.

The order you set the parking brake is important.

    Hope this helps!

Two things to remember about e brakes. One, don’t reef on it like it’s prom night! If the drums are hot when you park and you do that it can lead to warped drums. Two, if it’s wet or you have driven through water and it’s freezing out the e brake system can lock up (several threads about that on here). Use in moderation and you’ll be fine.

I made the mistake of reversing down my steep driveway with the PBrake engaged and it warped the drums. The result was squeaking in reverse and clicking when going forward followed by an $1100 repair. There may or may not have been warping prior to that but it certainly was the cause of the major symptoms right away.

That’s why I came here to make sure it wasn’t some weird Tacoma rule about using (or not using) the parking brake all the time. I use it everyday because my driveway is angled. This is the only time it’s been a problem.

Pretty expensive lesson, especially since it only happened once. I’ve done the same thing in other vehicles like my wife’s car and it didn’t hurt anything. Just “oops take the parking brake off dummy” and then go on about the day. That made me wonder if there was more I should know.

I'm sure it’s also possible that at 110k miles the drums might’ve been worn already and this was just the final straw.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Everyone here seems more knowledgeable than I am. Thanks in advance.
