I was a shop manager for a large transmission shop and I can tell you if the transmission is high mileage and the fluid is dark if you flush it you'll most likely be walking in 2 weeks. All though it was good profit we discouraged trans. service with high mileage.

I would think removing the trans pan would be necessary to clean and remove sediment/particles.
Otherwise one 'chances' the stuff to get disturbed and distributed....what think?

I want to know If i should have dropped the pan and cleaned the filter? I do not want to be walking in two weeks.

Transmissions have improved dramatically in the last 10 years or so but I still would not flush a unit with 100K on it unless it's all highway miles and looks good and red and doesn't smell burnt stop and go stuff is far harder on a trans then across the road. The little metal crap in the bottom of a pan is harmless and most likely ended up there early on unless it muddy gray and thick. If it's muddy gray or brown the trans is most likely due for an overhaul any way. If you tow a lot and don't have a really good cooler installed every 30K is a good time to change it. Like some one else said if it's having problems flushing it won't help and may kill it sooner then later.

I was debating this a few weeks back. I talked with a buddy of mine who owns a high performance shop and he advised on just a drain and fill. He did a flush on a Jeep Cherokee with 350,000 miles, original transmission and the owner had instant problems. My buddy said its good to have some of the smaller particles in the fluid so an older transmission has something to grab onto.

New clean fluid has a tendency to take the facings off of clutch packs the old glaze does kind of protect the facings on high mileage stuff and new fluid washes off it is highly detergent. And yes a trans with 100K and a of stop and go or a lot of towing is high mileage any thing else not so much.

Sounds like a rough rider so it must be an off road?
