Lol, nothing will happen. I work at a GM shop as a trans tech, and I have NEVER seen a parking pawl with an issue. And trust me, I have rebuilt A LoT of 4l60 and 4l80 transmissions. In the 80, the pawls are not that big, and it is holding 7-8,000lbs trucks! It will be fine.

X2. You are more likely to break a u joint slamming it into park then doing any thing to the trans. The detent spacing is fairly wide so some times it will move a little bit before it locks.

Thanks for chiming in on the parking pawl thingy. Alright once and for all since you're the Trans Tech.... CAN YOU SHIFT A MANUAL TRANS WITHOUT THE CLUTCH (rev-matching they seem to call it) and not hurt the transmission or synchros? Thanks for your insight on this issue!

From another gear specialist, shifting without the clutch is hard on synchros on a synchro transmission, unless the rpms are matched perfectly. The likelyhood of that is VERY slim. Rev matching with the clutch, ie double clutching, is easiest on them.

Makes me cringe as well when someone lets a vehicle rest on the trans.

There is a parking pin in the transmission. Not all weight it going directly into the transmission. There is a separate thing for parking altogether. For all you guys saying that it would wreck the transmission, if there wasn't something locking the car the tires would just roll over the engine. As you can start a car in first by giving motion and the key switch to on(bad thing to do). Although putting the parking brake on is a good habit to get into because it does lock your tires from moving.

I believe are trucks are servoing type drums(Correct me if I am wrong) and using the parking brake often allows for the adjustment of the drum.

    Thank you good sir.

Another thing to add, if manufacturers made so with the the vehicle putting weight on the transmission they would also make the auto's use the neutral and parking brake method vs using "park".

Don't worry they make vehicles quite dummy proof now a days.

As well if you plan on using your truck as a hitching point to pull something (while in park) make sure to put you parking brake as the parking pin can only handle so much till failure.

Little late on that comment bud.

Also, (last time I am doing this.) if you are going to use your parking brake, be sure to put it on, put the vehicle into neutral, take your foot off the brake, then put it into park to not put pressure on the parking pin.

    Aamco brochures recommends
    1. Put transmission in neutral.
    2. Engage the parking brake.
    3. Let go of the foot brake.
    4. Put transmission in park.

Automatics have a park pin because there is no connection between the driveline and the engine when the engine isn't running, which drives the transmission pump, which applies the clutch packs. You can't bomb start an auto because if this. Anything but park will act as neutral when the engine isn't running.

Yes, you can shift gears without applying the clutch. It is worse in larger vehicles with destroying the syncros. Sport motorcycles don't need to use the clutch at all. I hardly ever use the clutch on my r6 when I'm racing. No need to. The parking pawl will not destroy itself even if you are binder on a hill. It is just releasing. That is all. I have seen only one parking pawl go out. That was because his brakes went out, and had no other choice but to destroy the transmission. :-/. Sucks, but it saved his life. When the engine is not on, everything is in neutral. There is no direct connection in the transmission until 35 mph or higher (torque converter clutch is applied).

COMPLETELY different design entirely. All gears in your R6 transmission are meshed constantly, the engagement of a dog gear on a splined shaft is what transmits the power. So yes that is fine on the bike, not so much in a car trans unless you can do a perfect rev match every time.

Ahh, you caught me. I COMPLETELY forgot about that! As stupid as this may sound, I understand Automatic transmissions better then manuals. I have rebuilt over 100 autos and 2 manuals. Lol. I was that weird kid in school that did division better then multiplication.
