Yeah, but in my opinion it's Toyota and they know what they're doing with engines. My opinion would change if they were adding a turbo or coming out with something completely new and risky. Does that make sense or am I a lunatic lol?

No that makes sense but the whole "partial Atkinson cycle" thing sounds to me a bit like the GM V8s that run on 4 cylinders to save fuel... Just something that could mess up

True. But Toyota isn't Chevy. I have faith! Lol

I have a 1999 Honda Accord with 143,000 miles on it that I bought new, and it is as reliable today as it was when new. I tend to keep vehicles for many years as long as they hold up, and I wouldn't be buying the Tacoma if I didn't need a 4 wheel drive. But I'm keeping the Honda.

Glad to hear it brother. Honestly, I might get hated on for saying this but I'm a huge honda guy. If the ridgeline was a real truck I can say I wouldn't have bought a taco. I figured Toyota was better than a domestic. Next best brand in my opinion. Don't worry guys I still love my taco. I'm just a honda guy at heart lol

I considered the Honda Ridgeline, but wanted true 4 wheel drive, not AWD.

Yeah, it's a good choice. I know a lot of guys at work with a ridgeline and they say it's the best ride they've had from a "truck" but it's not really a truck. It's a glorified SUV. But I'd rather have a real truck with 4x4 as you said

Lexus has been using the Atkinson Cycle engine for a couple of years. Here is a article from March 2013.

Moving this technology from Lexus to the Tacoma makes me feel more comfortable.

I wonder why they would say in this video that the rear seats don't fold completely flat. Awfully presumptuous of them. You can clearly see on the base of the seat bottoms that they were built so the seats fold flat. Drives me nuts when reviewers mislead like that. Complete BS. In the NY times.

The engine is new'ish. It's an updated version of the 2GR-FSE (used since 2005) tuned for the Tacoma. The main difference is a different VVT-i actuator on the intake cam to allow a wider range of adjustment. That range of adjustment allows for the computer to put the engine into "Atkinson" cycle on demand. Even so, VVT-iW has been used to accomplish this on other Lexus engines already without issue.

I would not really call it a new engine. It's an updated/improved old engine. Much like the rest of the truck.

Toyota seems to have taken very few risks on the new Tacoma. I doubt we'll be seeing many issues.

MSRP for the tow package is only about $150 more than invoice. Not getting the tow package on a truck or suv is pretty silly in my mind. Its a cheap and real upgrade compared to most things.

People keep saying not to buy a first year vehicles, but surveys show this is not true its actually just the opposite. That may have been true in the past, but not today. First year vehicles have less problems.

DI and HP fuel pumps may cause issues over the very long haul, but the first few years should be fine for reliability.

Yea, just ask those early adopters of the 2nd gen, with their engine mounts sinking into the frame, and melting headlights.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Yup, people have such short memory, and unwilling to admit that their admired company can cause major fkup .
Cracked frames on 2005 was big one. Most of trucks went salvage (as in total loss)
What survived is battling head gasket issues.
Melting headlights, bending tailgate are just icing on the cake.
Also lets not forget biggest one.
2005-2008 frame rust recall that is still going on.

I bought a new taco and live in Canada. We salt the crap out of the roads here. I plan on getting a company called krown to do some underbody spraying to prevent the rust. Did Toyota do anything different to prevent this from happening on the later models?

The 1999 Accord style which I believe is called the 6th gen (not sure) was released in 1997. And you most likely have the 4 cylinder because the V6s are kinda junk. The 4 cylinder is the F series which had been in Hondas for years. You weren't taking a risk on that 99 Accord, it wasnt a new model vehicle. Those are excellent cars, in 4 cyl form, especially if you're lucky enough to have a japan built.

Yet, you still drive a 2007 Tacoma. :argue:

My 06 is still going strong. No rust issues, No motor mount issues, No headlight issues. Go figure:cheers:

I may purchase a 2016 when the dealerships have a bunch on the lot. I rarely purchase in the first few months of a model year.
