I have a 4WD, 4 Cyl, 5 sp manual Tacoma Access Cab. Even though it is 4WD, it is not "TRD". I spend time in Colorado, and find myself in situations where are few inches (don't go there :p) of lift would be helpful.

Is it worth lifting a relatively low-end truck like this, or should I upgrade to something more capable before I do?

Completely your choice. If you have the funds and want a lift go for it. Figure out what lift best meets your needs though.

Heck yea. I had a 2002 Reg. cab 4cyl 4x4 non-trd. Lifted, big ole tires & re-geared. Make it your own rig. Just because it's not TRD and 6cyl, doesn't mean it can't be badass.

Do it you'll love it. 3 inch ome with 285's 2.7 5 speed 4x4. It settled down to about 2.5 inches with the sliders and a ifs skid.

What tires are you currently running? How much $ do you have to spend?

Yes! With the low range box power shouldnt be an issue offroad. A set of shocks will give you a better ride, more clearance and the room to fit some bigger tires.

For every feature in the TRD (except maybe the sport seats) that your truck doesn't have, there exists a more capable aftermarket alternative. By all means, upgrade as your budget permits.

If you NEED the extra "help" clearance then yes, it is absolutely worth it.
If you don't NEED the extra " help" and can still make it past the obstacle in your path, then you'll need figure out what the value is to you.

I've owned and lifted 3 different trucks. None of which I need to lift.
I just did it for looks, like 95% of people with lifted trucks.

That being said, I have owned stock trucks that need clearance and didn't have it. Wrong truck in the wrong place and the wrong time.
But that's called life I guess?

I still vote YES, it shouldn't hurt anything.

Op, just in case you weren't aware of it already Non-TRD = Professional use, so yes it is totally worth it.

You only need lockers, A-Trac, Traction nannies, if you are a novice to wheeling, and want the truck to do it all for you. Watch, the 2018 Tacoma TRD-Offroad-Pro Edition will have a CVT transmission and Hybrid dirve.

My first truck had a 22RE, had a lever for 4-Hi & 4-Lo, and you had to get out and manually lock the hubs. I will be dammed if I couldn't take that truck further and harder than most of these TRD Offroad versions today.

*Disclaimer* TW please don't take my post serious, I'm kidding.

yeah lift it. trd doesn't mean anything. a 4x4 is a 4x4. you can mod it to be better than a trd if you wanted to.

    That's why I didn't lift my I4. It was an I4 - no power. So I got a factory lifted Baja V6.

Glad I did instead of sinking money into the I4.
