Is my 2wd TRD sport destined to just be a mall crawler?

You can easily enjoy a 2wd Taco. Depends on your interests, obviously. A couple friends of mine use theirs to surf/dirt bike, and haul construction stuff back and forth to home/job sites. For what they do, there's zero need for 4wd.

I'd say you only need it if you live in an area with snowy weather in winter, plan to do some moderate-severe offroading, or just plain want 4wd for no particular reason!

I'm in northern New England. I used 4wd maybe once or twice all winter. Before marketing people shamed everyone into getting 4wd you only saw it on plow trucks. When I was growing up here NOBODY had 4wd, it was mostly just big @ss rwd sedans. We all managed to survive ;-)

    Like, so many.
There are some guys on here who go hard off road with a 2WD. Get you some good tires.

Honestly, if you are not offroading to the point where you have at least 1 wheel completely off the ground most of the time then 4WD isn't all that necessary. 4WD is cool and all, but if you live in a very flat state then its not all that useful.

More parts to break and more expensive to fix if you ask me.

Still think its cool, just not something for me.

Depends on the offroadign you do.
The number of times I used 4x4 since I have owned my 2018 was about 5 times and that's me purposely going into mud pits for fun which I normally avoid. I don't rock crawl, but I do a lot of mountain runs (going like 30+ mph up and down the Arkansas mountain or desert runs).

Having 4x4 is pretty awesome when you do get stuck or need it.

If it indeed has 2WD, that's all most of us need. I admit it still comes in handy but only once a year or 2. Usually now just if I want to be lazy. I can find another way. Most times it's a matter of "do I want to wash off mud or walk?"

4wd is like insurance, it will feel unnecessary until something happens and you need it.

Yea OP I have a 2wd and I offroad more than anyone of my friends who have 4wd. And I’ve gone places they hesitate to attempt with their 4wd. If you have good offroad technique and proper recovery gear, you can go a LOT of places. Just look at my tricked out poser offroad 2wd lol

Yotatech did the same thing to me back in the early 2000s when I got a 99 Prerunner. Ended up putting a rear locker and good tires on it, made it much more capable offroad but still couldn't go on the harder trails that my 4wd buddies could. It's the reason I have a 4wd 04 Tacoma now lol

A 2wd is better in every way , unless you really need a 4x4.

what's stopping you from going off the road? You won't be rock crawling...you won't be hitting the tuff trails. But you can still get out there and explore. Just be prepared. Expect the unexpected and use you judgement.

My first "Off road" vehicle was a 1968 Datsun P/U with a gutless 1300. I got stuck plenty.

2wds definitely have their place. They're more capable than you'd think offroad and also come with less maintenance. Don't let the offroad snobs on this forum make you think you have to get a 4x4. I am more than happy with my 2wd sport.
