Is my 2wd TRD sport destined to just be a mall crawler?

Why would a 4x4 truck feel any different.?You should not be using 4wd on pavement anyways.

Is it 4WD locked in or just a 4wd drive vehicle in general?

Don’t forget the belly-dragging transfer case and the silly-straw exhaust pipe that everyone chops and reroutes with inferior tubing or cloisters up as an Iron Maiden.

I never understood why you wouldn't pre-run with the same truck you were going to race?

How often would you use it offroad and is that enough to justify the (most likely) mods you'll add and the potential repairs associated? I bought a TRD OR knowing I'll probably use it for some off roading but not a ton and resale I expected to be higher on one outfitted that way. Have no real aspirations of being a rock crawler or modding it to the ends of the earth just some enjoyment of places I couldn't go in a car at all and take my kids to see some new/interesting places as they get older. Plus I wanted to get back into a truck because I missed being able to carry things

Years ago for races like Barstow to Vegas racers would drive the course before the race. They were scouting routes and planning resupply points. The trucks weren’t put to quit as sever use. Those that could afford them used the same model truck as their race truck. Thus pre-runners.

Slam it, boost it. Street truck glory. Or do what ever 2wd capable trails there are in your region. You might get stuck 100 times and give up on trying to offroad a gimp truck.

I'm still fairly new to the forum, but no stranger to 2wd or 4x4. I grew up in the Northeast, by the Canadian border. Is 2wd doable? absolutely. But 4x4 is so nice when it's 20 below zero out, and you don't have to shovel in front of your vehicle. You can just power out of your driveway through 20 inches of snow and the 40 inch furrow the plow just made in front of your driveway. I'm moving to Texas in a few months and have questioned whether or not to keep my 4x4. My ultimate decision was made for me. While 2wd's are certainly capable, I plan on taking some long vacations and doing the Morrison Jeep Trail, the White Rim Trail along with a few other adventures. I wouldn't trade my little RC 2.7L 4x4 for anything.

Right, purpose built truck for the desert. Which is great for one thing, going fast in the desert. Absolutely useless for the trails up here. But again still cool for what its made for.

I think we need to refine discussion with a definition of "off-roading". Dirt trails, muddy trails, etc, are still roads as I understand. Off roading in my mind is driving where there is no defined road, rock crawling, dune jumping, etc. I'm not an expert, just seems like a comparison lately to what a covid death is, means different things to different people (and no, not being political, just trying to draw a comparison).

4x4 was fun for a while, but eventually I figured out three things about it: a) I can get to 100% of the places I need to be, and 99% of the places I want to be, in 2WD. b) Seeking out rocks just to prove that your daily driver can bash rocks is a stupid exercise. You know, the same vehicle that you depend on to transport you to steady employment, which is what keeps said vehicle in your possession. And its being used to bash rocks. o_O c) The trails look a lot better when you aren't cooped up in a metal and plastic greenhouse. There are better ways to enjoy them. For me at least.

The last three trucks Ive owned were two-bys. I havent missed the front diff, ever.

The whole "thats not offroading" crap is garbage. There are plenty of guys that have these sexy ass rigs that can get over a 6ft tall boulder but ride like absolute trash over 20mph. Then there are people that can handle viciously unmaintained roads and whoops at 75mph and ride smooth as butter but because they dont have front axles they "werent worth modding" And just because you dont stop in the middle of a run to take a photo doesnt mean you dont actually get out and enjoy your vehicle.

Basically, do what you want, let others do what they want, and shut up about it . 2WD AND PROUD

I'm actually thinking of trading my '19 O/R 4x4 in for a sport 2wd. I want to buy a small travel trailer and be able to take a street bike with me in the bed of the truck. the trailer I'm looking at has a hitch weight of 331lb (2970 GVW) 420lb for bike / tiedowns / ramp 250lb for me for a total of 1001lb. my ORLB4X has a cargo capacity of 1095 lb as compared to a 2wd sport longbed that has 1355lb capacity. if I want to go offroad I can just take my dirtbike.

Nah mane. Anything off PAVED roads...the degree of which varies in difficulty from “well manicured dirt road”, or “trail on flat, waypoint to waypoint, at 80mph” “through a giant mud puddle” or up a “rock pile”

Cuz by your definition, Score bajas arent off roading. And THAT is the bleeding edge pinnacle and benchmark for which real off roading is measured.
