Is my 2wd TRD sport destined to just be a mall crawler?

Learn to love your truck. My 2wd has brought me to really fun places even when it was stock. Add a few things here and there and you can do 75% of the trails!

265/75/16 tires only everything else stock.
I keep my truck in 2wd till I get stuck enough then shift into 4wd. Driving in 2wd off-road truly will make you better at driving on trails. Just don’t go somewhere you know you’ll get stuck.

I've taken mine 20 miles down the beach and seen 4x4s spinning both tires, fish-tailing through some nasty sand, while I cruised on by. Been up some decent 4x4 only trails in CO to trailheads, never even needed my locker. My own driveway is crushed stone with hills and gets washed out bad every time it rains. I use the e-locker mostly to preserve my tires/ not spin, and to keep it engaging regularly, but don't really need it. 2wd Taco is more than excellent for what I do a majority of the time. However, I want to go further without the worry of getting stuck, both at the beach and on harder actual trails in the mountains, so I've been hoarding parts for a 4wd swap eventually.
With a decent suspension and tires on your Taco, you can do some pretty awesome stuff in 2wd. Plus the e-locker, that should cover an overwhelming amount of shenanigans you'll be up to.
