Is my clutch going out? Or something else?

    3" lift. American racing 15'' rims. 33x12.50 BFG A/T tires. tool box. ARB bumper, mile marker winch, kc highlights. No carpet inside sprayed with bed liner. Kicker door speakers. Alpine head unit.
    So for the past couple weeks it seems my clutch is getting worse. When I drive my truck and I shift into any gear the rpms go up and the truck doesn't accelerate. I just have to very gently give it gas and it will very slowly accelerate. Does this sound like a clutch problem or something else :confused:.

    The friction lining on the clutch disc is either glazed or worn right off. New clutch time!

    I'm sure this will indeed fix it nicely; however if you are poor like me; this will also very nicely fix it for less $$:
    Marlin Crawler has an excellent kit; I had one installed about 8k ago and am extremely happy; the majority of the parts are actually OEM
    I also bought the flywheel they sell when this got done
    They also have outstanding customer service

    If you don't get a new flywheel, make sure, at least, you get it resurfaced when this job gets done

    If your like myself, I find that the OEM parts dont handle abuse very well. So I go out of my way to install something bigger, better, and improved:eek: I dont want to fix something twice lol. As I know marlin has quality stuff and they are a great group of guys, the kit includes some oem so to me its a no sale.;)

    Back to OP, If you have the funds I would suggest finding a clutch that will do what you want it to do, then take it one extra step so you know you want have to do it again.... On the side note I dont have your gen, im a second gen.

    I second what has been said about Marlin Crawler. I put one of their clutches in my 86 4Runner and it was great! I don't have personal experience with URD's clutches, but I know the rest of the stuff they make is top notch! Regarding the OEM clutch, my buddy has 310,000 miles on his 2001 Taco 2.7L with the original clutch and I have 140,000 miles on my 2002 Taco 3.4L with the original clutch as well.

    About the flywheel, I would replace it, Marlin Crawler has them for around $120. Or at the very least have it resurfaced, you do not want clutch chatter.

    Also now would be a good time to check out the condition of your slave cylinder and throw out bearing! And i'd inspect the rear main seal for leaks while I was in there.

    Swimmer has some great advise for the additional items that should be done or at least checked when u replace your clutch.
    Murph, just curious, how many miles do u have on this clutch.

    What are among the most important considerations/habits for maximizing clutch lifespan? rpms btwn gear shifts, avg rpms in any gear, full range press and release of clutch, fastest time from fully engaged to fully disengaged, other tips/pointers????

    My first manual trans was 2006 Hyundai Accent, and that only lasted 6 years (I forgot mileage)... so apparently, I need some improving if I hope to maximize clutch life for my Taco!!!!!!!!:confused:

    Starting from stop is where the most wear happens. Low rpm engagement is best with minimal slip. Don't rev it up and then slowly engage.

    I bought my '07 v6 6 speed used.
    The previous owner replaced the clutch @ 17k.
    Yes 17k.
    What gives?
    I have 44k on the truck now.

    You'd have to ask previous owner, any retard can burn up a clutch in 17K with even the best clutch.

    It's the orginal clutch from 2000 it has 229,000 miles on it. I'm second owner truck from about 50K. And I ended up picking up the marlin set up and a new slave just because I'm in there. Install saturday :D.

    Get that clutch replaced soon! I had symptoms like you had and ended up stranded on the side of the road. Couldn't go faster than 5MPH. Save yourself the headache, good luck with the install!
