I tow a 23' trailer and emptied for travel ,it wieghs around 4000lb (not towing with with the tacoma). Your trailer looks like its heavier and thats why they may be gawking.
Your setup looks right , you even have the dist. hitch.
I'd be interested in a label recheck and seeing if its actually kilograms ,they list both usually. If you have weighed it already ,then i'd say you are right and no bother. if it is Kg then its around 5500lb and still under the Tacomas rating.

Im not "gawking" over the fact that it can or cannot pull it. The question is: can it stop it safely in a distance short enough. If you're pulling a trailer and following the 4 second rule for trailers... the person in front of you in a civic slams on breaks.. can you stop? who cares about how much power you have to pull, you got to STOP the damn thing.

And im not saying it wont stop it, thats just what i would look for.

BTW I have my CDL and drive trucks and trailers daily.

Korupt, just for clarification.....When Tacoyota used the word "gawking" it was in reference to the OP suggesting that people were staring at him pulling the trailer. TY wasn't referring to anyone involved in this discussion. :)

I towed nearly 6200# yesterday (60 spools of barbed wire on a car trailer). The DC TRD Sport w/Tow pkg did a pretty good job. The one thing I wished for was better braking capacity or trailer brakes. I'm not sure the tranny liked doing nearly 60mph in second coming down a 6% grade.

Plus, I added airbags. SWEET mod. ZERO sag in the rear end with only 10# of air. I'd guess the tongue weight was around 350-400#.

After this trip, as long as I had trailer brakes, I'd feel very comfortable towing a 4000# camper just about anywhere.

Looks like it's got sway bars so it should handle all right, but I'd be concerned about an emergency stop if there's no trailer brakes. You can be careful but that doesn't stop some idiot from pulling out in front of you... The truck will pull that much trailer just fine though.

You should be fine. I have the 2.7 l4 and I pulled my old mustang around Houston just fine. It was just a lil slow getting to 60MPH

Reffer to OP... or post #1 ......we arent talking about you, We're assisting the OP.
I have a CDL too tanker hazmat doubles, but we are reffering to Tacomas towing 6500lb or less , wind loads , braking etc. I'm sure he has a brake box too, he is savvy enough. What I dont want is a heated thread of Commercial driver vs camper trailer.

WOW! i wouldnt tow a trailer that sized..but that's just me. i do not have alot of experience towing..so i would seek out a "training" trailer.

i have dragged a fleetwood E3 all over the west side of the country, using a duramax. and i felt the weight back there..i bet the E3 weighed 4500 fully loaded. using my taco, would keep me up at night..but again, i have a short towing resume.

So if you were in a tractor trailor and you were 4 seconds behind a civic that suddenly slammed on its brakes. Do you think you could stop? NOPE!

To the op, Your truck is rated to pull that amount of weight. The brakes are definately the weak link. But a trailer that size should have it's own brakes? ...Correct? So in the case of the trailer having it's own brakes then i say if your truck seems to pull and stop it fine then go for it!;)

The truck is capable of towing that load but it's a much more even "fight" between the trailer and the Tacoma then it is that trailer and a full size truck.

Think of this... A big rig is out weighed by the trailer by 6 to 7 times! So i think the truck possibly being lighter than the trailer is not a big concern.

dont all the trailer wheels brake? and a tractor trailer has 8 tires in back providing traction in unison. and the trailer is essentially a "fifth wheel", with the load over the rear axle(s).

    not bad, tacosupreem..got me thinking.

Many on here say the truck should handle it fine based on the manufacturer's specs. My taco has the tow package and the brakes are shit without any added weight. Also, the manufacturer has already misrepresented that payload capacity of 2nd gens. Why should we trust that the towing capacity isn't misrepresented as well?

there are variables, but the tractor part might weigh up to 20,000 lb on a 80,000 gvw truck trailer say is then 60,000 , thats 3:1 not 6-7. They are designed to tow , if they arent towing , braking is often worse.
They really cant be compared, but look at one aspect of towing . Toyota says itll haul 6500 and your truck weighs ....4500lb ? ..... (im in a reg cab, 4000). In that respect his trailer weight wont be a problem.

fwiw, some dry trucking info..... each axle has 2 brakes, lft and right to the 4 wheels/tires on it , 2 on the steering axle too of course. The tires dictate how much load a given setup can carry. In Oregon which is most likely the same as other states since CDL is federal, each inch of tire width allows 600 lbs. Its mostly to do with pressure on the asphalt and not tearing the road up due to being overweight. an 18 wheeler then has 5 sets of brakes. Those tires are highway tread for good mpg/economy , dry weather braking is decent, once it rains they give up traction fast.

On the tacoma you have the distribution bars , they place weight on both truck axles, but mostly the rear. With 2 trailer axles a brake box set up right I dont see a problem towing w the tacoma below its rated wght , brakewise. A strong gust of wind from the side or long steep grades uphill possibly burning the trans. are among my first concerns then.
