Is my Tacoma not equipped to have abs rings installed?

Switching axles housing to fit a rear locker in my truck.
Hey there, we are doing a swap of axle housings on our 2001 tacoma, we want a rear locker. The problem starter when Toyota mechanics said that the ABS rings will not fit on my axles, I cant press them on myself, but everywhere I take them they seem to be clue less. I have a good idea how they should go on. My axles where not installed with abs ring (rotor skid) so a bought one for each side and took axles of back of truck for someone to press on. They seem not to fit. Is my Tacoma not equipped to have abs rings installed? I bought a rear locker axle hosing and the locker as well, had it all together and found out there was a leak in the rear differential. That's when I noticed that I needed the abs ring and retainer. Anybody have good or bad news for me about making this change, or help. I need some!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Welcome to TacomaWorld
Does your Tacoma have an ABS pump and control module mounted under hood on left side close to the firewall in engine compartment?
Many owners delete ABS altogeather as it's not totally necessary anyway.
Not all 1st gen Tacomas had factory ABS to start with.

The question you're actually asking is: will the ABS tone rings fit on an non-ABS axle shaft.

I don't think they do- the non-abs shafts don't have the machined location for the tone rings.

The good news is, if they don't, you just need to find the right axle shafts, and find yourself a press.

Original axles for the a base model 2001 Toyota Tacoma. Trying to put a locker on the rear end. everything works except the differential started leaking. The new parts should fix that. So what you all are saying is the axles need changing.

That will not work? All axles are supposed to be the same is what Casey and I though. He is the owner of the truck.

There are 2 style 1st gen axles.
The difference is at the wheel end.

The e-locker 3rd and it's axle housing assembly requires ABS axles and the associated correct bearings and seals. This is true even for trucks that did come equipped from the factory with an ABS braking system. And yes, these trucks that came from the factory with an e-locker all had a tone ring on the axle. However, that tone ring is not required on a rebuild if the host does not have an ABS system.

I am pretty sure the bearings and seals are not interchangeable either. IIRC, there is something about the axle shaft diameter in the area where the bearing rides that causes this.

@Squeaky Penguin Do you have any insights for the OP. I know you have had issues you've sorted through on these axles.

You need ABS axle shafts. Doesn't matter if it's from a truck with a locker or not.

The non-ABS shafts neck down immediately after the bearing retainer and won't work with a tone ring, or the inboard retainer ring that rides on the seal.

I would recommend the Yukon axles, but then you would also need to swap to a 95-00 style bearing.

4 if you count ABS vs non, and 95-00 vs 01-04

    Agreed, good catch, thanks.
Thread wording has me wondering which parts OP had vs. recently aquired and desired outcome of mod.

Wording is confusing for sure. After rereading it, sounds like the OP has a non-ABS truck, and tried to install non ABS axle shafts on the new housing meaning the seal wouldn't be sealing on anything.

OP, you don't need the tone ring at all, but you still need ABS axle shafts and the 2nd, inboard retainer ring. It should look like this when you're done.

sorry, no abs form the start. have a 01 tacoma 4:30 open.. sourced out parts, housing from o4 tacoma, elocker from 4runner and smashed it together, as installing, relized the inset of housing differences and so on, learned a few things since, yeah, so . i completely understand where you are coming from, where the foruom i read about locker swap mentioned abs\nonabs were compatibly, only to realize as he talked of on 04, that year comes with abs regardless, they just dummy plug the speed sencsor..so, i am left getting axles.... can i weld up my old open diff to make it like a spool?

can be welded yes. but definitely wouldn't do unless its an offroad only rig. on the cheap you can get a bunch of different lunchbox lockers for that diff.
