My Tundra TRD Off Road came from factory with a sweet SR5 chrome badge on it. Tacoma doesn't have one.

Just like mine is equipped now. I mean. They SAY it’s an SR, but it’s actually an SR5.

I looked at the build sheet for my 2012 TRD SPORT and the truck is clearly tilted as a DCLB SR5 4x4 with the build sheet then listing "TRD Sport Premium Package" as the first line item.

My buddy’s old TRD pro tundra was less equipped than an SR5. Toyota’s packages make no sense.

For the 1st and 2nd gen Tacomas, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road were sold as packages on the SR5 trim model.
For the 3rd gen Tacomas, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road are sold as a separate trim from the SR5, instead of being add-on packages. However a VIN lookup will show Sports and Off-Roads as being SR5.

So going off the VIN and Toyota's categorization, Sports and Off-Roads are SR5, though not sold as such.

Also I'd like to add that an M3 IS a 3-series. That would be like someone with a TRD Pro saying that their truck is not a Tacoma.

For clarity and with no bias, Toyota has changed the trim levels and branching of the Tacoma models since the 1st gen, and 2nd (I think).

This is somewhat oversimplified but more accurate as to how the trim/models relate to one another:

    ........................ Off Road ----- > Pro
    ..................... /
    SR ------- SR5
    ......................\
    ........................Sport ----------> Limited

SR5 (reasonably equipped and capable) is an upgraded model of the SR (base modle)

Off Road and Sport diverge from the SR5
Off Road is designed/equipped to perform off road. The pro is then and offroad that has been upgraded to be "well" equipped and "more" comfortably perform off road.
The Sport is designed/equipped to perform ON road. The limited than is a sport that has been upgraded to be "well" equipped and "more" comfortably on the road.

The bulk of these differences are in suspension.

This is not to say than ANY model could not do well on or off road. It is true that with no modifications the OR and Pro will do better off road than the sport or Limited. On road the opposite is true.

You guys ever wonder if we're thinking way too hard about this? Or if OP was just trolling?

Who was the OP again? Even if op was trolling, so what. We still have loads to discuss. Some people here still don’t know what SR5 means, so these threads help shed light whether or not op was ballbagging it or generally just being awesome

    I drive a SR5 Prerunner Offroad Sport 4X2.

Have to admit, the 1st and 2nd gen trim levels are clear as mud.

    SR>Limited>Sport>SR5>Offroad>Pro

    SR -Too many things missing.

Sport - shitty Hitachi suspension and no real performance advancement over the SR. (+1 for skewp hood)

Limited - chrome, lord, so much chrome.

SR5 - Most of the good stuff without breaking the bank.

Offroad - capable, good looking. (-1 for no skewp option.

Pro - Best appearance features, decent suspension. (- 324,000 for price to advantages over the OR package.)
