Pardon my stupid question, I have a 2018 so it has the tss (little unit in grill). Is it only supposed to work with cruise control or is it supposed to notify me if something is too close to me? I have the trd grill with dealer garnish (OEM grill) and it never works (never tried to use cruise control yet). Also it never worked with oem off road grill (never uses cruise control then also) and no I never had any error messages etc. Truck has 1800 miles, so did I get a lemon? (Tongue in check sarcasm...only sorta)

It doesn't beep at all, I drove real close to my other car and hit the brake hard and nothing. Looks like toyota fucked up and screwed the pooch yet again!!!! It's bs that I need to take time out of my day and I hope those cocksuckers at the stealership don't try to fuck me because I have the pro grill on it now

My forward collision alert has only come on twice since I got the truck (1600mi) it tried to alert me when a car was turning ahead of me ~50 ft in my lane and I didn't slow down but otherwise not a peep. I think its probably fine

Calm down. I don’t have an ‘18, but my wife’s car has the same type of system and the beeping can be turned on and off via the head unit.
Adaptive cruise control would be the best way to test it to make sure it’s working.

Lol what? Go on the highway and try your cruise control out. It works at 35mph. The braking will happen after the point you think you’re gonna crash. It’s hard to safely check that.

Actually it looks like someone needs to rtfm. Why would the truck automatically brake if if you already are?

It beeps to warn you and if it senses a collision is imminent it will apply breaks to avoid or lessen the hit. If you apply breaks and it senses a collision anyway, it'll amplify breaking force

Well it'll start to beep at you and the dash glows red and says "BRAKE" if it feels your deceleration is higher than needed to come to a complete stop. It'll then assist in braking at the very last moment which is at the point that you CANNOT safely test out. It comes up on mine in heavy traffic sometimes. The assist has never hit yet but the warning a few times. But yes it WILL automatically brake even if you're pressing the brake.

Be glad it’s broken - use your senses and respond to traffic accordingly

The automatic cruise control is pretty awesome though. Let’s say I’m cruising along at 75 miles and hour in the middle lane of a three lane highway. Ahead of me is an on ramp and a large truck has to move over into the middle lane to allow room for vehicles to enter the highway. He maybe going 55. Well the cruise will sense this and automatically slow me down the speed he is and hold me at a preset distance I control. Once my lane is cleared it’ll take me right back to 75. No buttons push. No braking. No wasted gas. Most of the speed reduction is in the tranny. It’s awesome. Gone are the days of always setting cruise on and off. If the person slows down 1mph I’ll slow down 1mph. It’s the future.

There is a sensitivity adjustment you can change. Perhaps yours is on the lowest setting

It's actually on the highest setting. Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll try the cruise control and report back

    I tested mine :anonymous:.

Big empty card board box in the street.

The wife’s subie with eyesight did much better.

Maybe it’s the relatively low speed or the low density of the box. Either way we’ll need another box to do some additional testing.

    Neighbors prob think we’re crazy.o_O

Doesn't it not work below 20 MPH by design? I know the cruise doesn't.

Lane departure is the only thing that doesn’t work below 32mph

Try your cruise. Don't touch the brakes. It shuts off at 20, beeps and warns you in the dash. Been that way since 2016 in my wife's rav4 along with my 18 Tacoma.

It stops working either 30 or 31mph. At least the adaptive cruise control.

I understand how it works, my wifes RAV4 has it. The system may not think a collision is as imminent as the OP since he is already pressing the brake. The TSS not kicking in may not be "toyota fucked up and screwed the pooch yet again" and more of OP needs to read the manual and get a better understanding of the system.
