Is over-landing like the Crossfit for TW

Some of these builds are ridiculous and no one overlands in Big Bear with six rotopax, a slurpee machine and the latest copy of reader's digest. Wait for it, I need to do an oil sample because I go to some dangerous places and I need to know my oil is in peak condition. Why you ask? because i'm driving through Desert Hot Springs, Desperate Hot Springs or Desert Box Springs on my way to Modernism Week In Palm Springs. Then it's on me and the wife of going to some $14.95 Burger joint in La Quinta, but i'm itching for my Instaham fix. I haven't posted a pic of my truck in a while, So we drive out to Niland and take pictures of the rustic Salton Sewer and my Tacoma, we try and do the Oh What a Feeling Toyota jump, but my wife Sarah blows out her knee and we have to bounce, but not before loading those pics and much to my surprise they came out, a perfect Kodak moment. So we arrive at Eisenhower in Rancho Mirage and three hours later they kick us free. I wanted to find a place to go camping, but that's out of the question. I try to console the wife because my pics have gotten 50 likes. This is my life, this is the new currency likes and retweets. So we find ourselves in Cat City at some chain hotel. My wife is super pissed about this because we're burning up points. Ah real currency.

So the 3 day adventure the RTT was only deployed for the pics in Niland, like some fat newbie crossfitter showing off a new pair of shoes in a Instaham post at the gym. The back to Redlands and the buffeting wind was driving them nuts. It must be those recovery boards on the roof. As they pull into the driveway and wife bursts into tears, because apparently Raccoons have gotten into the Chewy box left on the porch. She's your typical dog mom and was hoping to have some treats waiting for poofers when she picked him up from the bespoke dog boarders. They charge $125 a day, but they do his anal glands and toe nails which makes it a bargain in her eyes. The man will settle in for the night on TW and Instaham looking for the next upgrade. The wife is broken inside and outside. In college she always hoped to have more exciting adventures, this over-landing camping stuff is just a bunch of work to live like a hobo for the weekend.

Hmm, I have an MT already, maybe I should get a RTT?

I have zero issues with models this long in the tooth. The Frontier exterior is quite nice. That interior looks like the turn of the millenium though.

Hey, though! The Ranger dates to 2012!

Looks aside, that interior is pretty darn functional. As the least stylish guy on my block, this is fine by me.

Very true. I suppose my beef is the swaths of matte chrome plastic. I do appreciate the muted Taco 3rd Gen interior once the few bits of shiny chrome are killed.

Hang on to that 1st Gen though!

If we're getting personal, I'm not stylin', am overweight, and have no class. Ha!

Fair enough. Chrome coated plastic is awful in any case.

If things go the way they think they are, I'm probably going to trade the frontier in on some high mpg econobox. I don't need 2 trucks, and the taco is 4x4.

I really don't want to get in the weeds here, but what do you consider as off road capable vehicles for sale that are better than the Taco? I can only think of a few and they're all much more expensive.

If you can live without AWD, I'd say take a nice test drive in a Mazda 3. The used ones depreciate more than the other Japanese small cars.

    Gold.

I was thinking nearly the same thing a few days ago when someone got on my ass for taking more pictures of my dog than of my truck when I took one of my offroad trips to Sedona/Flagstaff.

Overland is to the offroad community what “operator” is to the tactical community. Hell, the real SRT/SWAT/whatever guys don’t even use the word “tactical” for the most part.

The Mazda 3 is a great car for the money esp used. I had one for a week as a rental and was impressed.

Very true. I couldn't get the fam excited about those. Watch the model years on those. Honda had some issues with cylinder deactivation.

Greeeeeeeeat. Sometimes I just want to get like a 2000 corolla with zero features and call it a day. All this extra complexity drives me batty. Thanks for the heads up.

Isn't CrossFit just exercising or working out really really really really fast, therefore making the CrossFit Games basically a workout race?... That makes me tired thinking about it. Nap time!

You're welcome. Both GM and Honda had some class action suits over it. Mazda only added it recently and has a really good track record with the SkyActiv engines. We grabbed one with 121k on it and it rips for an NA 2.0l hooked to a slushbox. Even the beat up ones that we walked away from purred and drove well.

I hear you! When I started looking at Tacos, there was a 2000 Ext Cab with a FlipPac not far away that I was drooling over. We would have needed a loan though (damn kids!). The stuff was in a sweet spot back then. Just enough stuff for good performance without all the feature gizmos.

    Itchy feet, my man!

Definitely agree. Over landing you say? I call it camping. Camping with your truck is legit, but unfortunately it has turned into a fad that many abuse. Going to the grocery store with shit attached all over their truck, like it is the zombie apocalypse.
