The overlanding fad is kinda like hookers. You don't want others to camp so you can be by yourself and have the primo spots but you kinda need people to so there will be a market for the shit you buy.

Yep. It seems like 1998-2008 was about the sweet spot. Maximum reliability, minimum nonsense. No touchscreens inside and they weren't piling on complexity to get that next 0.5 mpg.

You'd think a nearly 20 year old vehicle wouldn't need a loan

Ain’t gonna lose sleep over what other people do with their trucks. I see enough bullbars and billstein lifts to not really give a crap what they think of mine.

Roof Top Tents are just one of those things I don't understand. Its big, its heavy, you _need_ a truck to move it, you can't go anywhere with it deployed, and when the fabric degrades in 5-10 years, you've got a very expensive paperweight. I'll sleep in a $99 Eureka on the ground, thanks.

With the FlipPac, it was list at about $15k? I was inches from doing something dumb there. In this area, 1st Gens are everywhere and still in great shape.

After that, we tried to find some older 2nd Gen ACLB MTs with almost 150k on them. Those were going for close to $20k out the door. They drove like new though. Ended up with the 3rd Gen simply because it was easier to afford.

When did camping become overlanding? Also, I like my RTT. Better for my back and gets the wife outside. Expensive af, though, even used.

I hear you on that. If I won one as a prize, I would sell it. Call me old fashioned. Like you mentioned, the last thing I wanna do to my truck, is give it additional unnecessary weight and a high center of gravity.

They sale Flux Capacitors on Amazon now.

One nice thing about the 2nd and 3rd Gens is that my fam does fit in the back. I fit well enough in the back of an extended cab Pickup for a long drive once.

The fam all like the Taco much more than the sidecar that it replaced, which was not a reliable commuter.

I bet the flux capacitors from Amazon are the cheapo units that only move forward through time at 1 second per second.

We crammed 5 full size adults into my Nissan for a 6 hour trip to New Mexico. They only made that mistake once.

    Sidecar, as in, motorcycle?

I didn't even know what overlanding was until a few months ago

I'm horrible with keeping up on the latest fads. All I know is that Sprinter vans, and "van life" are insanely popular here in CA.... or maybe that peaked a year or two ago? Who knows... I go camping in a tent I bought from Walmart.

    To each their own. :D

We'd have to get @Dr. Emmett Brown in here to know for sure.

We've done 1hr+ trips with no complaints. I am still waiting on my first ride in the back. Haha! We keep having tentative plans for long trip that just don't pan out. One of these days, it will get the real test.

I've spent a lot of time crammed in for trips. That's part of the fun. Reminds me of all that crazy shit we did growing up.

Yeah. After many years of discussing (argueing) about getting a second bike, I final sold our second car and got a new Ural back in 2013 for winter commuting and hauling shit. It was great when it was running well, but four years was all the we could tolerate. The Taco is the next best thing.

I always thought overlanding was driving for days across terrain with no roads, no services along the way, etc... Like a week long trek across Africa or something. What a lot of "overlanders" do I just call camping and you drive up a 4 wheel drive road to get there. I do chuckle when I see trucks with all the shit attached all the time. There's a guy I see around town and on my commute that always has a RTT, shovels, rotopaxs, etc... attached to his truck. That would annoy the hell out of me. But hey, to each their own. I say do what makes you happy and who cares what others think!

Why does it matter how people want to spend money or what they find cool?

Whatever makes you happy, who cares what others do with their trucks or camping gear.
Way worse things to spend your cash on.
If someone goes camping and leaves the site dirty that’s worth freaking out about.
