By rooting your droid you are gaining access to "root" files and are able to modify the OS system. ie..much like jailbreaking an iphone.
This also gives you the ability to "Overclock" the cpu and possibly the gpu for for a quicker phone. Specifically in gui mode.

i've considered doing it with my G1, but i just picked up the droid 2 last week , and it in itself was a huge speed upgrade, so i'll keep it in the back of my mind, im afraid if i do it i'll be too tempted to change everything

When you root you WILL want to change everything. All I wanted to do was over-clock my processor, ended up upgrading to a whole new operating system.

Droid X has a 1 click root as well as 1 click custom recovery. I'm running a froyo build that is deodexed. Its very snappy. The great thing about moto devices is that if you do brick them in most cases they can be recovered with a low level flash using RSD Lite.

How about your battery life? I manually installed froyo before the OTA and it seems buggy and kills my battery. Rooting and installing your rom have any ill or positive effects to battery life?

Eh, I just rooted it. Seems okay, only thing (which could be the phone) is that the touch screen is jittery. It did this after the 2.2 update and still continues now. Any way to calibrate the screen?

I just rooted my HTC hero, now I can use the wireless tethering feature free of charge. It is pretty cool to be able to get my personal laptop online on my long boring overnight work shifts.

I just did it today and haven't found a single adverse effect from rooting. Everything seems to run smoother with a custom ROM compared to stock. It unleashes the capability of the droid.

plug it into your computer, mount it as a disk drive, back up your entire SD card just to be safe. My phone has 8gb internal storage as well and most everything i do gets saved to that, so if its just a plain droid you have, backing up the sd card will be fine.
