came across these pitted 17" sport wheels and was thinking of making a project out of them and having a set of wheels for winter. Would it be bad to buy these (not for the asking price of course), sandblast, and powdercoat them?

read on different threads and still haven't found a straight answer, just curious about structural integrity and if it would visually turn out nice.

I think it would depend on the media you used.

Is there a point to blasting aluminum anyways since it doesnt really form rust or scale.

the only reason i'm thinking of sandblast them is to smooth out the pitting and make it more of a consistent look, but im open for suggestions

Sand blasting will not in any way shape or form affect the integrity of the wheel I can assure you this. If anything it's the curing in the oven after powder coat that would have the greatest chance of affecting the integrity but even then as long as you don't over bake them and do it at the right temperature it's perfectly fine. Just take it to a reputable shop and not some guy on Craigslist powder coating in his back yard shop.

+1, take it to a reputable shop and you'll be perfectly fine. They'll probably turn out better than the factory finish. I see a lot of these sport alloy wheels with the factory clear peeling. Keep in mind that you can't powercoat the plastic center cap. Some really good shops might be able to do it, but most won't deal with plastic.
