Is the Tacoma moving in a favorable direction (1st gen to 4th gen)??

Discussion in '4th Gen. Tacomas (2024+)' started by yotadust, Apr 24, 2025.

?

Toyota is selling brand new Tacos gen 1 thru 4 for 4th gen price. Pick one...

  1. 1st gen

  2. 2nd gen

  3. 3rd gen

  4. 4th gen

Imagine thinking this is anything but a tire friction and torque converter stall speed comparison

It's really just a size thing for me. I want a truck the size of the older ones that's still strong and capable for the trips I take.

So Toyota's been going backwards since the Pickup days, for me.

    The Maverick is calling you…….

All vehicle manufacturers are going bigger. Can’t put that one on Toyota

I mean I'm not trying to say that Toyota's are City trucks or anything I'm just mean that they're overall gearing in first gear and second gear in 4lo is a lot higher (numerically lower) than all of the competition. They are not really meant for low speed crawling off-road they're more meant for high MPG highway cruising

The only Maverick that will ever call to me is the one Ford makes after realizing that it shares the C2 platform with the Focus RS. That'd be a rad DD.

The Maverick as is doesn't work for me. Like I said before, I need something capable of doing the trips I go on. The Maverick isn't.

When BMW realized that the 3 series was getting too large they introduced the 1 series (now 2 series) as a car that appealed to the original 3 series market of small sporty coupes. Other manufacturers have done similar. There's nothing stopping Toyota from introducing an equivalent in the capable offroad truck space.

I deal with the size of the Tacoma, but I in no way like it.

I wouldn't mind the Tacoma getting smaller about the size of the Land cruiser 70 pickup truck. As long as they add about a foot to the seat height and ceiling height like the Land cruiser has so it don't feel like a go-kart when you're driving it

Yeah that’s definitely closer to what the size my ideal truck would be.

In north america, Toyota has simply lost its way because of government regulation and feedback from city folk

    peak Japanese pickup engineering:

The 50+ more ft lbs of torque at half the rpms the 3.5 builds torque will easily make up for any difference in gearing. The 2.4 is a much more powerful motor.

Have you driven a 4g? TONS more low/mid range torque. Not that it matters, but the 4th would easily drag a 3g around. Then hook up to a hybrid which has 65 more ft lbs of torque than my 22 Hemi did. WAY more impressive drivetrain.

havent driven the 4g yet but I did drive the Colorado trailboss turbomax at 430 foot pounds. It felt kind of weak starting off but it may have been that Im not used to that serious turbo lag feeling...

Yeah I 100% agree with you. I had a 4th gen OR non-hybrid loaner last year and while there were some things I didn’t like about it, the torque was not one of them.

Those trucks are absolutely not slugs like previous Tacomas were.
