I wonder how many of the whiners are driving automatics. Buy a sissy transmission and then complain about it's performance............

It's definitely not the best ever, but leaps and bounds better than the auto I drove in a previous JKRU.

Since adding a tune I've fixed every issue I had with mine personally.

Digs of graveyards in the "emerging civilizations" of Mesopotamia revealed much. Bones from hunter/gatherer were taller, had more injuries, died younger. Bones of the "citified" were stooped over with bent spines (sitting for work), shorter but lived longer.

    Pick your poison.

The "trading center" of Ur also gave us 60 minutes/seconds and a 24 hour day (hand representations of hours/minutes because of too many different languages).

    My name is Cliff Claven.

Nothing is stopping anyone of us marching off into the wilderness and living off the land, but that is a brutal way to live. There is a reason we domesticated animals.

Can blame agriculture for the rise of civilization, and why most of our hunting now is looking in the fridge and cupboards. We used to have a large garden, but got tired of all the work that took, it was tremendous trying just to feed two people, processing alone was cutting into my dirt bike riding, that is ¡No Bueno! So forget that BS! Only farming I do now is harvesting fresh memes… :D

Used to be a diehard manual trans guy, and yeah do missed it a bit, but have grown to really like the auto. Kinda nice just to sit there, especially after a long day of beating the shit out of myself on the dirt bike. Pretty soon here our trucks will be self driving and I’ll be able to take a nap on the way from the trailhead back home. Machines have certainly gave us more leisurely time to go play. That whole work thing is waaay overrated… ;)

Same/similar situation.......had a manual on every single vehicle I've owned since my first (1985 Chrysler 5 speed Turbo Daytona) that I had to have my pops drive home since I was 16 and couldn't yet even drive a stick.

After taking all of the 6 different Jeeps I've owned to EJS including my JKRU (and honestly being a bit jealous of the Toyota drivers there) and dealing with manuals on the rocks, I can say driving an auto has been a really nice change.

Have been driving them for 40 years, it was really hard giving it up, I sure did put up a fuss. My wife said, quit being a grumpy son of a bitch curmudgeon, you’re getting older anyways, maybe it is time…

…she was right, she is always right, don’t tell her that though. :p lol!

My bad back sure feels a hell of a lot better too, hardly bugs me at all anymore, guess that ever so slight throwing my hips out of alignment pushing in the clutch was agitating it.

All I say is the 3.5 is around for a while , and it was in the Tacoma for 8 years , multiply that by the hundred thousands, and then the people that abuse the hell out of it, don’t take care of it , not to mention do mods that may not be good for it . I think overall it’s a very impressive motor . Now is it a rocket ship? No . Would I call it fast no. Would I call it adequate, 100 percent yes . Perfect no , nothing is .
My wife had a RX and a 4 runner and both were great cars. Not the most exciting to drive . At some point we bought a BMW X5 , and what I will tell you it was absolutely awesome to drive. It felt like a sports car half the size . But as far as issues OMG . It was a nightmare . If you ever want to go broke, get one . All I can say is some of these smaller motors from every manufacturer produce tons of power , and 8 and 10 speed transmissions. I really hope later on it don’t bite us in the ass.

I guess we will have no choice but to find that out .

    Work in progress...
Hooked up with the 8 speed transmission, like in the Camry, I just wonder what the 3.5 would have felt like in the 3rd gen. The world may never know...

I think it would been good. It may have been on the table for sure . But I think with the hybrids and electric in the background the 4 cylinder was the next progression

It is an “everything is relative” point of view. We could simply compare the evolution of the Toyota truck engines over the years, each gen was a slight improvement over the last, and each has their quirks. The new Turbo 4 probably has the biggest jump and driver feel but still it isn’t anything that will blow your socks off. The hybrid will though, it will probably start breaking parts too. One of the reasons Toyotas tend last so long is that they never really played power pissing match game. The engines weren’t trying to tear the truck apart.

TFL already broke theirs, so only time will tell if more power they decided to now play exposes other weak links.

Have owned Toyotas since the 22R days, never were the fastest or most powerful things, but got you where you needed to go without much fuss. Guys who need massive amounts of power in their vehicles probably need to work on their self esteem…

1000% Its virtually fixed every drivability/shifting/gear hunting/towing issue I've had with the truck and trans.

Yes I too think it’s very weak and sounds like it’s on the struggle bus but it’s reliable it’s a Toyota and reliability is what I bought it for. So I’m ok with it
