Same. Previous car, and first ever car was a Yaris iA. 106 hp, 103 torque from a 1.5L 4 banger. The taco feels like a space ship in comparison but I've driven many cars from work so it definitely does feel slow compared to those other vehicles. But it has actual passing power on the freeway compared to the iA. The iA had no torque at all in 2nd,and when I say no torque, I mean no fucking torque. If I'm coming to a stop at a red light and the car downshifts all the way to 2nd as I'm coming to the stop but the light turns green so I gotta get back on the throttle in 2nd, it'll barely move. Barely feel the car moving. With the 3.5, I at least feel something, even if it's not much compared to say a Grand Cherokee or Ridgeline.

Ya’ll got it made…back in the day in Darmstadt Germany, Tamara told me I couldn’t go with her and her friend to GB. She told me if I went with them, they would never be able to hitch hike. I was like whaaaaaat?

She gives me the keys to her Yugo and tells me have fun…and at a snails pace, I cruised around München’s outskirts. At a snails pace is putting it kindly too!!! I won’t even talk about the Datsun or VW Rabbit, man I was pogh!

My previous car was a Hyundai Getz 1.6 (overseas model) with probably same power as your Yaris.. mine was manual so I guess I felt the “power” “better or more?” And my taco is manual so I theory I can get it up high when the “vtec” (haha) kicks in and it goes..

Calling one of Toyotas most reliable engines ever produced a ticking time bomb when going uphill is an interesting take. Especially when you consider the 3.5 is the one who has issues with going uphill :)

There was no such a thing as accelerator cable. It was just regular 03 SR5 4runner.

I guess it was just big old 4.0L V6 without being choked by computers, sensors and all that modern BS.

I also heard that same V6 is in Camry, Highlander and I really feel ashamed, I hope no one around me will know that xD.

I've put on 33" mud terrains, overland armor, RTT, etc. No tune.
I still pass people on the highway easily.

    Sounds like skill issue.

I just have to chuckle when I hear comments about the 3.5 being weak, while one cruises up a grade with the A/C cranked, radio playing while sipping a cool beverage from the standard cup holder…and harken back to when I was sweating bricks in my ‘86 short bed. 22R with 33’s pulling the same grade with the windows rolled down, 3rd gear and the accelerator floored.

My ‘93 X-Tra Cab DX 22R-E automatic wasn’t much better (but at least had integrated cup holders…lol).

    I suppose it’s all relative…

Even my wife’s dearly departed iQ felt like a luxo-touring barge compared to those trucks.

    3.5 is weak and slow
But that's standard stuff in Tacomaland

They're not meant to go 0-60 in 3 seconds

Maybe your 2.7 four banger has issues going up hill, but I have never had that issue in my 3.5. You just have to know how to drive it and where the sweet spot is.

Mine has too much power…

Ha! Back in the 80s my grandmother had a diesel Rabbit, sloooooow…my dad also bought a Yugo for some strange reason, hilariously slow too. Kids today don’t know the meaning slow. The 3G is a rocketship in comparison, and has more HP than the 390 I had in my ‘76 F250.

Doesn't tow nearly as well as my 6.7 diesel did.

I have the 3.5l in a 2023 SR with AT.
I compare it to my 22R in my 1991, and the 3.5l has an order of magnitude more power and get-up-and-go.

I'm curious: has anybody published a torque curve for a stock 3.5l?
I'm thinking the variable valve timing could be very beneficial for low end torque.
It seems logical to me that Toyota would focus on low end torque specifically because the A/T shifts at such low RPM.

Even in ECT mode, mine shifts around 2500, lower in non-ECT mode.
