I have a 2017 MGM parked outside year round with direct sun and also sap, bird droppings, with some minor scratches from branches falling on roof which have gone thru some parts of the clear coat. The paint otherwise looks pristine after a wash… nothing like that.

I think I hit the roof with synthetic wax once, but usually only wax everything but the roof.

believe mine is a Mexico build

Don’t forget to wax the roofs. It may not always help but it’s good to do it occasionally. I detail cars when I’m not in school and I’ll usually spray wax and buff wax after detailing. I try to spray wax my roof weekly even with my Prinsu roof rack on top

good tip: install a ppf on the roof as early as you can

would putting a prinsu or similar style roof rack up there help prevent paint fading?

That’s how it started. That was the initial sigh that prompt me to “have a closer” look.

we waxed once before the paint fail and didn’t use machine car wash after the hand wax. Still explaining it by improper paint car is bogus. What is the truck a gremlin? No feeding it after midnight or else…
Both the Ford vehicles we have are older and parked in the same exact spot with minimal care and nothing to this day.

The only way Toyota corporate finally fixed it was by harassing the shit out of them for months. Also had Toyota collision center write up a report saying how paint thickness and clearcoat thickness was below factory based off their gauge measurement.

Toyota admitted factory fault finally when they fixed it. Mexico built .

You’d be better off waxing/sealing regularly or using a protection film which specifically protect against UV. A roof rack won’t do that.

If I were OP and the dealership doesn’t provide any assistance, I’d wrap with vinyl.

edit: sorry I quoted the wrong person. :frusty:

Lightly driving under a mulberry tree. Just the green leaves made contact with it and it did that. It’s akin to having very dry skin and then scratching it with your nails, you’ll see the flakes of skin where you scratched. Even ur finger could flake off clear coat / paint at that stage

I literally graphene ceramic coated my subaru because of this thread. And will be coating the pro shortly. I honestly do not want to take a chance with my paint failing.

Japanese manufacturers always skimped on good clear coat. My 2012 VW Tiguan's paint (Austrian built) looks like brand new after 11 years of being parked on the sun. Never waxed, always ran trough cheap car washes. Not a single hint of paint going bad.

Most of my VWs and Audis were/are no less reliable than any other Japanese cars I had. Germans have done a good job on fixing the problem areas. Japanese on the other hand are slacking more than ever, riding the waves of their legendary reliability from the 80-90's.
