I don’t have this on my roof- 18 mgm. Hopefully I don’t. I even washed the truck in the dark (not saying much being dark early) last night. But I’ve been thinking of wrapping the roof more and more lately but in a satin black

I talked to guy a BeyondWraps here in So Cal. He said I should consider a wrap more like paint protection than paint replacement. It will only last about 3 years here in the CA sun.

...that's almost as long as the clear coat lasts on a new truck.

I thought paint wraps required a smooth paint finish. I didn't think they could be applied over rough paint, but maybe they can. I was looking at 3m's hot rod gloss red and thought it would be cool to wrap my entire truck, but I was quoted 3k and up. Also told 3-5 years life expectancy, but that's in AZ and our summers are brutal.

I wonder if you could plasti-dip the roof in black or a similar dark grey?

Plasti-Dip is an interesting idea. I'll look into that. I'm also going to get another paint estimate or two. If I can still get some assistance from Toyota with a lower estimate maybe I just bite the bullet and repaint.

2017 TRD Off Road MGM (purchased new) with roof, hood and door sill clear coat loss. Has anyone seen a straight line going through the areas of paint loss? The hood is also starting to go and there is also a straight line going across the paint loss. Deterioration happened rapidly, once it began it seemed to accelerate. Out of warranty, no dealer assistance, informed it is water-based paint due to EPA regulations. Extremely disappointed. Tacoma has less than 25k miles. I suspect loss started about a year ago.

Had a 2003 Tundra (original owner) in black that lasted over 13 years without any issues. Any feedback regarding the line going through the paint loss would be appreciated, trying to build a case to submit to Toyota Corporate as the local distributor has denied any paint defect. Other Tacoma's in my area in the same color and year have no issues as extreme as my truck. A friend has the exact same truck (2016, a year older) in the same color and does not care for his truck and has NO issues with paint.

I would go the route of a wrap as well...could be done for nearly 1/4 of the cost

That's strange. I've never seen a line like that across a panel unless it's been cut or welded. However, that line appears too clean for a sheet metal cut. Agreed on water based paint being garbage. All new cars have it these days. I'd have it repainted and blended into the rest of the panels. Wrap won't stick to that very well.

I suggest opening up a claim with Toyota Corporate - maybe this will one day lead to a recall. They offered me $1000 toward a repaint if I do it though a dealer. I have an agreement in principle with a second dealer that is offering the repaint for about $1700 so it will be $700 out of pocket and no rental car coverage. I'm planning to have it done in April when I'm on vacation and won't need my truck.

I don't have that line across the paint -- that's strange. I told most of my story on this thread but let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.

Here is my (probably) final update to this saga. To save you from scrolling through this thread, here is a recap.

Oct 2021: I notice the clear coat failure on my 2016 Tacoma and and open a case with Toyota
Nov 2021: I get a quote at my local dealer for $2400. Toyota offers out-of-warranty assistance of $1000. Since it is outside the 3 year / 36,000 mi warranty.
Dec 2021: I get a 2nd quote from a Marina Auto Body of $1700. Toyota refuses to honor that quote stating I must work with a Toyota Dealership. After some research I determine this body shop is the primary body shop for Toyota of Huntington Beach. Toyota corporate requires me to send it through Toyota of Huntington Beach to get any financial assistance.
Feb 2022: after multiple visits to Toyota of Huntington Beach, I get approval to bring it in and pay $700 out-of-pocket for the repairs. A rental car would be extra so I delay the repaint to April when I'm on vacation and won't need my truck.
Apr 2022: I confirmed the authorization I got in February was still good (which was not easy) and drop off my truck. Before I leave for my cruise, I get a call from Marina Auto Body, they got my truck and ask for my approval to do the repaint without removing the windshield. It reduces the risk of breakage and will save me some money. I agree.

Today: I return from the cruise, go straight to pick up my truck and pay the $700. I later get a voicemail from Cindy at Marina Auto Body saying my new total is $1412.15. With Toyota paying $1000, my total should have been $412.15. Shame on me for not listening to my voicemails until after I got my truck -- I had no cell service for several days and had planned to listen to all my voicemails after getting home. I call back to the dealership to let them know they overcharged me by nearly $300 and Omar at Toyota of Huntington Beach said that was their markup because they had to transfer the vehicle to the body shop and store it on the lot. I know this is BS because I'm the one that authorized the body shop to change the quote and the only reason I used Toyota of Huntington Beach in the first place was that Toyota Corporate wouldn't credit me if I took it directly to Marina Auto Body.

At the end of the day, I'm happy that my truck looks great and I was satisfied with paying $700 for this repair. But Toyota had multiple opportunities to provide excellent service and turn an already loyal customer into a lifelong customer and they failed. First, the shop at the first dealership I took it to told me it was clear coat failure and they've seen it on other vehicles. Toyota could have stepped up and covered the whole thing and they didn't. Then, when I got a quote at a reputable body shop, they refused to let me work with that shop directly, causing me to waste 2 months and multiple trips to a different Toyota dealership. And finally, Toyota of Huntington Beach blatantly kept the extra money that I had negotiated for, claiming it was their profit. I told Omar I would never return to Toyota of Huntington Beach and I'm not sure I'll ever buy another Toyota after this fiasco. That said, I love my truck and maybe all manufacturers would give me the same run around for something out of warranty.

Massive thumbs up to Marina Auto Body who gave me a fair quote, did the work quickly and was willing to pass the savings directly to me.

Well you could always mail a demand letter to Omar/Toyota of Huntington Beach for the $300 or so and mention small claims court, but your time is worth something. Of course you could sue for that too, but for $700 and your time I'm sure you're glad to be done with the ordeal and have your truck back.

I'd let the paint cure for a month before applying any waxes or sealants. New paint needs to off gas. :hattip:

I'm really starting to wonder what safe colors even exist for these trucks. White vehicles are my favorite but seems super white has problems (maybe more common because highest volume color?). I was thinking MGM would be my go to color for the future but if it's having issues with clear coat I'm not sure what to do. My 17 year old Lexus that has lived outside its entire life still looks good except for the mirrors where the clear coat is dead, color is silver.

Could it be residue from the film they put on the vehicles when they are shipped. I had marks on my roof i wasn't sure what it was from and tge dealer told me ir was the film residue.

No, my first call was to a detailing shop and he told me it was clear coat failure and it needs to be repainted. My truck was about 5.5 years old when I first noticed it.

Mine was the first quicksand one that had issues I've seen. But I will say Sierra Toyota here has been great getting things taken care of. They got my truck monday and I got a loaner car . They said it'd be a week, hopefully not longer. It took my 20 year old f250 to see similar issues with paint.

SFGiantsfn Thanks for all the details on this. I’ve got a 2017 in black with a hood with the beginnings on major paint failure. My 03’ was black and did the same thing.
Best of luck with the new paint looks great.

Thanks @jolter2 and @Tronfunkblow. Now I just need to find ways to keep it looking good. I still need to park outdoors just about every day. My mobile detail guy said regular waxing every 6 months is my best bet.

OP that sucks, sorry to see that.

I have an MGM '17 that is about to roll over 100k on the odometer. To say I am disapointed with quality of the paint is an understatement. I have small chips and scratches all over. I have no illusions that it should look ike it rolled off the lot but the hood of the truck especially is rough.

Got my 2018 back yesterday and looks really good. Sierra Toyota did excellent in helping with getting the paint fixed. The service advisor did tell me they had a blue taco in for similar paint issues as here. No idea if it was voodoo or cav blue.
