I'm going through this same issue with my 2015 Tacoma, only Black Paint. Dealer told me to call the Toyota 800 number. Toyota told me there was nothing they could do because there was no recall on the Black paint. Went back to the Dealership, a new service manager told me that a Toyota corporate rep would have to look at it, and he would call me when the Rep. is there. Fast forward two weeks. Service manager calls, says the Corp. guy is there and wants to look at the truck. I bring it in, and am told to take it to their Toyota body shop. Make an appointment 3 weeks out. Take it to the body shop get the estimate.....check back with the Service manager who tells me that the Toyota Corp. guy left Toyota, and had not filed my paperwork before he left. Said He's waiting to meet the new Corp. Guy, and see if the claim moves forward.
The service Manager told me that Toyota is aware of paint issues on the Tacoma's that were built in Baja California. So, I feel like i'm getting the run around. I'll be calling the Service manager this week, but am afraid of what he's gong to say.
I'm ready to run it up the Toyota Corporate ladder next, but I need a good way to attack this. Can anyone here point me in that direction should the local Dealership decide to shut me down. The Paint is getting worse with every passing day, and the issue is spreading to the hood as well. Very disappointed in the build quality of this truck....

Same issue with mine at 47,000 miles/4 years when I noticed it. Local Toyota Collision center manager said it was a known issue & would refer to Toyota to see if would cover. Never got back to me even after several calls to him. Called dealer where purchased & said call Toyota corp who said sorry, out of warranty. Now hood is showing signs as well

Currently dealing with this exact issue on my 2nd gen 2012 MGM. Noticed the clear coat failure starting on the roof right in the center by the windshield in 2020, took it into the dealership and was quoted over $2K to repaint the roof. Fast forward to now, the entire roof is fucked, have a rust spot, more than half my hood is fucked and its now starting under all four of my front and rear windows. Called the dealership about a month ago, they gave me the brand engagement number. Spoke with a supervisor who advised me to have the dealership inspect the paint and have it documented. Had that done 2 weeks ago. The dealership advised me to go get an estimate at a body shop in Huntington Beach in Socal. They quoted it at just over $14K.....which is just an insane amount to me. Called and spoke with the dealership manager who denied the claim due to the age of the vehicle... Called back and spoke with brand engagement today who says they will not fix it as it's not under a recall or covered by the warranty. I've done everything they've asked and they're clearly just giving me the run around.. pissed as I'm still paying for the truck. I'm going to continue to give them shit and take it on until it's fully paid off in October.

That brings me to a question as I want to be educated in my defense. I'm reading that I should have the clear coat to paint ratio measured to determine that it is a defect. But, what is the correct ratio? Also, any other suggestions? Thanks.
    (Yes I understand this is a 3rd gen thread and I have a 2nd gen. I couldn't find a 2nd gen MGM paint thread)

Clear coat thickness varies quite a bit. I think the main issue with clear coat failure has to due with water base paint. It's industry standard now due to environmental reasons, doesn't last as long as solvent based and isn't as thick.

This is why opted to ceramic coat my 2017 a few months ago. I keep it garaged, but I'd like to avoid a repaint anytime soon.

My Barcelona Red 17 Tacoma which is kept spotless, has 31000 miles on it and is parked in the garage and not driven in the winter is showing early signs of paint fade which pisses me off. Just before the warranty expired I took it to the dealership to see about having the roof repainted and they they scoffed and said it wasn't bad enough for replacement and nothing was done because it was barely showing. I was in the market for a new RAV4 so I went with a Mazda CX5 instead. I have driven Toyotas solely since 1988. I really like my Mazda.

My 2018 cement is the same way entire roof faded. Crazy because mine has always been garaged and I work from home. Got 70k on it.
Called Toyota and I didn't even know the dealer included a 84 month complete paint protection. Looks like they will be repairing it, but we shall see.

I had a good experience at Marina Auto Body in Huntington Beach. They're the official body shop of Toyota of Huntington Beach but I had a much better experience working with the body shop directly. The quote for just the roof was $1700 but they found a way to do it cheaper by not removing the windshield. They called me to ask if that was ok and it would save me a couple hundred bucks.

July 2023 update: Stage 5 paint cancer progression:
    • Hood (CC failing on entire hood)
    • Roof (CC mostly gone with color layer exposed)
    • Sills CC failing and mostly gone
    • Doors (CC failing, can't tell from the picture, but there's progression right above and below the windows.

    PXL_20230728_003318633.jpg

    PXL_20230728_003337787.jpg

And just to show that I actually do take care of my truck and still wash and wax regularly ("That's just neglect, bro"). She still cleans up nice, but my wife doesn't want to take my truck anywhere "nice", so it's been demoted to "beater" status because of the paint.
    PXL_20230319_165606172.jpg

Estimate to re-paint is $4.5K for just the hood and Cab (bed seems OK) or $6.5K for the whole truck. Or $7.5K if I want to change to Cement. Then I was told by the shop I went to that "If you do nothing at all, just make sure to paint at least the roof. He then walked me over to show me my future, which was the below truck in his shop. Told me my girl had the risk of getting as bad as this black truck in about a year or two, even in California.

My wife's 2012 Touareg diesel has pristine paint after sitting outside in a stadium parking lot in Phoenix for 2.5 years waiting for the diesel fix and has been sitting in the same parking spot as my Tacoma for 3 years. That said, it's out of warranty now and I am scared.

I have a 2018 TRD Sport with Blaziing Blue Pearl that is turning white in patches, totally disgusted. Reported to Toyota customer service and told they'll contact me if there is a recall. This does not look right, it's actually in fading in very defined patches.

My 2018 Magnetic Grey roof is wasted. Toyota said I'm shit out of luck. What a crappy paint job. I think we should all get together to get this resolved.

I'm in agreement, this is not normal. I've never had another brand of vehicle where the clear coat/paint starts to fade out in less than 5 years. Do we have to get a lawyer to file a class action suite?

I talked to a lawyer. They said I'm outside my 3-year warranty, so there's not much we can do legally. That said, if anybody can put something together, I'll help any way I can.
My truck is now 7 years old. I got my roof repainted last year and now it's starting on the hood.

Mine was denied by Toyota when dealer submitted it, reason given was they claimed I didn't take care of the paint even thou entire truck looks amazing and sits in a garage all day.
Clear coat is completely gone on my Cement Gray roof , it looks white now almost all over.
I was hoping this would go to class action suit if enough claims were attempted and complaints. The Dealer I went to did everything they could to get me some type of coverage from Toyota.
    4 times it was denied.

You can see my camper which I put on almost immediately after buying still looks good. Hood is still ok but I’m waxing and coating it regularly now.

Same here. I plan on fixing myself by wet sanding, then using spray paint and clear coat. Looks like a lot of work but paying to have it fixed cost a lot for an old truck that I beat on.
