Is the 2.7L too weak?

    4.10 - 6 lug 5MT 4x4 and 4x2 all have the same ratio.

I thought that it was same whether it had two or three pedals? Also, I believe that 5-lugs like mine have 3.58 gears...?

Thanks. I'm curious what ratio is in the truck he's looking at. My 5-lug 5sp has 3:30 and the tranny (R155) drops to 2.06:1 in second while others mfgs. Second gear gear is 2.3ish:1. This means I'm in second, floored going 45 mph trying to negotiate traffic. Reminds me of drag racing with a powerglide for those of you who know.

Same axle code, different ratio 1G vs. 2G

I didn’t really need to look since I know the feel of a 4.10 from driving several 1G’s and my wife’s 3G T4r all with 4.10’s. AFAIK Toyota stopped putting 7.5 diffs in tacos in 2004 - all 2G+ have an 8 or bigger

    That’s a helpful link.
Mine’s A05A so 3.307:1 open diff. 2014. I should add that it’s a 5-lug on stock rims and tires (215 70R15) and tire size makes a difference which is part of the reason 6-lugs and 5-lug 4x4’s get lowered ratios.

I owned a 2005 4wd access cab with the 4 cyl. and 5 speed. I threw a Leer shell on it and drove it in the mountainous area in and around Reno, NV for 260K miles without major issue. I frequently drove over Donner Summit to California in 4th gear with a couple hundred pounds of supplies for a gift shop without problem. I gave the truck to my dad who has since upped the mileage to about 310K and again, no issues. I feel that the 2.7 is essentially bullet proof. We've had no oil leaks or other maladies doing the oil change at a 5K schedule and dilegently keeping up with the rest of the factory maintenance schedule. I will note that both front wheel bearings were changed at 165K. Other minor issues were a worn driver's seat, headlight replacement after 210K and a windshield wiper motor at about 230K. The damn clutch still feels great! I miss that manual trans and wish I had one in my 2020.
    I think you'll be fine.

Depends on what you consider "sluggish" as in compared to a 90' 4x4 with a 22re no, compared to same truck with the 4.0 most definitely

Depends on what you're going to do with it. For my uses it would be a no-go. If you think long term the V6 isn't that much more expensive, and the fuel mileage isn't that much different. And the future is hard to predict. It's always cheaper to buy a little more truck than you need today than it is to trade up in a few years.

LMAO every time i see this question i chuckle. The 4cyl has plenty of power to put a load in the bed. I probably have the heaviest 4cyl on the planet and i can still drive 70 on the hwy. Granit i have regeared as well but for the small amount of load capacity you will have in bed you'd be fine. If you really wanted too you could re gear to 4.88.

TLDR - The 2.7 will do what you want.
But the 4.0 will do it 3x better with about the same MPG.

I didn’t read the other responses.
    But I’ll give my opinion.

    I had a PreRunner - 2.7 w/5 spd.
It’s definitely “weak” but is capable of doing what it’s advertised. Pull 3,000 lbs.
You’ll be working the engine kind of hard but not will do it. You’re not going to be sticking 3,000 lbs in the bed anyways. So, there’s that.
Fuel mileage was not good for a 4 cylinder truck. I got maybe 20ish not hauling or towing.

The 2.7 in 5th gear is a DOG.
If you approach a hill on the highway in 5th, keep it in the right lane and let the others pass. Or drop it 4th and get with it.

I own a 2015 2.7 5 speed. I tow this trailer over through WV a good bit, have had it the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway and up to Nova Scotia and back. It has done the job. The automatic may be a different story, but the manual works for me.

I have a 2.7L 4X4 5 speed manual with an ARE cap. It's a dog, always has been, but I knew that going in. Yes, it will go 80+ MPH on a level highway no issues at sea level. Going up hills will be slow, but you will get there. At 5K+ feet elevation it struggles on even moderate grades; that means using 3rd or 4th gear, but I also like to keep it below 4K RPMs, and ideally 3500, so sometimes I struggle to even maintain 55 MPH.

The 2.7 loves to rev and is damn near bulletproof. So as long as *you* are comfortable holding higher RPMs as long as needed to get the job done, it will be fine with the added weight.

My 2012 Regular Cab 4x4 2.7l 5 speed routinely pulls my atv trailer into the hills of Pennsylvania without issue. It is all stock with the exception of sumo helper springs in the rear and a sprint booster module. I also haul firewood with it...a face cord of wood normally, sometimes a bit more. In the hills you will be shifting, level ground no issues in 5th gear. I bought this truck because I was honest with myself...I have no need of a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Even a longbed 1/2 ton is overkill for me. My suggestion would be this...if there's the slightest possibility you might be disappointed with the 4 cylinder, go bigger. The gas mileage isn't that much different.

I’ve got an ‘09 regular cab 2.7L standard transmission with a cap on the bed & small sleeping platform. The only time I really noticed any sluggish issues was when I was on a trip near Jim Thorpe, PA & I drove surface roads. Lots of large hills really tested the truck.

I would recommend regearing. It will get you where you need to go but you’ll find yourself in 3rd spinning it out the motor in the 3-4K rpm range. Just a matter of whether you like that or not. I personally don’t mind, I like to think it’s burning off carbon It will be slow though. But it’ll be a very reliable slow truck and easy to work on should something go wrong. But like I said I would regear it. It will help your clutch immensely, and your overall driving experience.
