What's too much shifting? If I had to do something to make it shift maybe it would be too much effort but since the AT is doing all the work why is it too much shifting? The idea of more ratios is to keep the engine in its economical operating range and is especially important with a diesel. Since there is an abundance of low end torque more ratios allow the engine to operate at low revs and still accelerate the vehicle and cruise at highway speeds at just above an idle

GM codeveloped a light duty 8 speed transmission with someone as of late, I believe it may of been Chrysler. They mentioned specifically possibly putting it in the Colorado. I wouldn't doubt they'd stick it behind the diesel. It could be good or bad, personally for my purposes a 6 speed will do just as much good in whatever truck.

By untested I mean it's never had a North American emissions system strapped onto it. That changes a lot of things. Plenty of good motors look like shit over here once they have exhaust filters and DEF to deal with. It cuts into the power ratings big time on some engines too.

The 3.5 L is a proven block, but yes they will have to prove it's reliability in a truck. The same way I'd say the 3.6 L GM engine has to prove itself in a truck application.

Toyota has been installing new frames. That's far more action than GM took when people were facepalming there airbag covers, literally.

I'm just here for the conversation. No offense taken or given .

Yea, exactly. I drove my friends IS350 and even on the freeway at 65 in Seattle on I-5 (very nice terrain) it was constantly shifting between 4th,5th, and 6th. And it doesn't help that there is a readout right in front of you that shows what gear you're in. It shifted nicely but it was noticeable and very annoying.

$2400? The only positive here is that was you and not me. ;) :crapstorm: If I put that $ on my loan, I'd owe $600 on my truck. I owe 3k thank Christ.

Um, the 2016 Tacoma isn't getting a larger or more powerful 4 cylinder engine. The DC Tacoma's with the 4 cylinder are absolute dogs. I don't think you'd be happy with one coming from a, likely V8, full sized truck. I'd go to the V6, the gas mileage won't be much different anyways since that little 4 cylinder has to work so hard to drag that much truck around.

I test drove the I4 in the DC Canyon. Unless you like living in the top end of the RPM range (and the accompanying high pitched whine - not unlike many of these threads), it's no different. Woof.

The target buyer for the GM twins are truck buyers, just like us. I think the Tacoma has better reliability and off road capability, but otherwise not sure if the Taco is more functional when it comes to hauling / towing. In fact, I believe the GM twins have more towing capacity (7,000 lbs vs 6,400 lbs).

I so agree. Maybe even a full year's of selling to see what the final numbers come out to. Personally I hope they do well. Competition is good. I am not sure Toyota would have even done a 3rd gen if not for these trucks coming out.

The commercials seem to suggest that "you know you want a truck." That tells me they're looking for new truck owners, and anybody else coming from Tacoma or Frontier is bonus. Probably a good strategy considering Toyota's market dominance. My prediction is the GM/Chevy will have fairly respectable numbers for 2-3 years and tail off into the mediocre range after that. It doesn't have the necessary qualities to dethrone Tacoma's established reputation and sales that only a true game changer could do.

With more ratios the difference in rpm from one ratio to the next is less so if your talking heat from the clutch packs it won't be as much as the wider ratios of the transmissions with fewer ratios. Torque converters generate the most heat and that's pretty much been dealt with the the lock up converters. More ratios will also lessen the need for the torque converter to unlock. The torque characteristics of the diesel should also lessen the need to shift.

Don't know the car that was mentioned so no comment on its need to shift frequently other than to think maybe it has to do with the engine characteristics and higher gear ratios to maximize mpg.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Unfortunately, yes. Sure, people can converse about other trucks and what not and what they like about 'em, but when they flat out worship them on a forum for a completely different make and model it just irks me; then go around bashing the Tacoma for everything that's wrong with it. If they like it so much, go buy a damn Colorado and get off our forum and join an actual Colorado forum.

It's the way I see it anyway.

FWIW, a very large majority of people in TW are very pro-Tacoma... obviously, but some of those people aren't necessarily hardcore and/or think fairly reasonably... no need to get butthurt. I've seen VERY few that actually hate the Tacoma or worship another truck. Mostly a couple trolls. VERY, VERY few. 404 anger not found.

Typically, sales will rise in the second production year of a new model.

.. I happened to watch the doc on how GM covered up the defective ignition switches for many years (despite numerous fatalities) and decided that I'll never, ever buy a GM product. Too bad though; it's probably a decent truck.
