Is the 3.5 V6 detuned for longevity?

There’s no shortage of complaints about the 3.5 being underpowered, but there are relatively few complaints of premature failure.

Is there a correlation between higher output and lower durability? Never had a ballsy Mopar, SS, or RS so no experience there.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
It's not detuned. Just designed for a minivan. It does not lack power as much as it does not produce torque at low RPM's. You know, the primary purpose of a truck motor.

The core population buying this truck use it as a grocery getting minivan.

Only half the purchasers of a diesel 250/2500 use it as a grocery getting minivan.

The primary difference is that the diesel dually is slightly better for hauling kids adorned with shinguards and cleats. Tacoma buyers typically only have one kid enrolled in savings-draining extracurriculars.

I am not disputing this at all. Merely pointing out that it is not weak to make it last. It is just weak because it was designed and engineered to not be strong. At the end of the day I am looking down on you peasants with your pussy motors. My intent was to establish myself as superior based on the displacement of my engine block.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
The vast majority 3rd gen owners would be far would better suited in a well equipped Sienna, but for their pride..

I owned a Sienna - It was the right tool for the job when the kids were little. It is a great vehicle for long trips with kids - I actually enjoyed it. It was like driving a tiny living room and it did its job well. The Taco would not have worked nearly as well for such a purpose.

I would argue that minivans also need power down in low revs. They also carry heavy loads. (Aprox 10,000lbs per kid :p)

But the Taco is heavier AND even less aerodynamic so you feel the weight working against you even more. The biggest issue is that minivans are not expected to be a performance vehicle - while on the other hand (for some unknown reason), taco people expect tacos to have the torque of an A1 Tank, and the launch acceleration of a GT3.

My manual transmission provides the fun factor in driving a slow vehicle (the taco) slowly so I don't have much reason to complain. (I don't drive slow necessarily - but I let the taco do its work smoothly without redlining at every traffic light. It does fine - but it is by no means a fast vehicle.

It is fast enough on fast dirt roads, but most off roading is slow driving. Again - it does fine for its intended purpose. (I don't have much experience in mall-driving so I do not red-line often).

All this constant crap of detuned, lack of power, lack of torque. Tacoma's are designed and built to be what they are. I also have a Corvette and it is not "detuned" at 430 hp from the factory. It is what is known as a C6 series Corvette with an LS3 motor. Most last at least 100,000 mi. so power, torque and speed don't mean lack of longevity!

We were told underhood temps were a concern, with higher towing capacity, they couldnt set the 2GR to max HP from 87 octane. Would probably do poorly with loaded emissions.

    Detuned?
As if the 3rd Gen had 1000hp and could do a quarter mile in .08 seconds in the design and testing phases?

I believe it was used in Lexus models before being used in a Minivan,

No. It's not detuned. It's retuned.

Designing a NEW engine cost a lot of money.
It's much easier to take an existing engine and make it work in "new" vehicle. (From the Lexus)
Which is what Toyota did, they change the camshafts and few other small thing.
Then stuck it in the Tacoma. Then called it an "all new" Tacoma.
It even shared some of the same components of the old Tacoma.

It’s fine for what it is . If I wanted a fast vehicle it would be a car with high hp and torque and good aerodynamics. Not a heavy brick with medium HP . People expect way too much from a truck . Just my two cents

No, mine is OTT tuned and now it runs like it should have from the factory and even seems like no loss of MPG!

I’ve never seen a Sienna out on the beach at Buxton, Avon, or Fort Fisher. Wouldn’t work for me.
