I'd trade my blown up 3.5, for a 2.7 anyday and then just boost the 2.7. Coming from 20r motors running 40" tires back in the day, both the 2.7 and 3.5 are power monsters lol.

It's too bad Toyota has stopped offering the 4 cylinder with a MT. That little engine loves to rev. Wind it up and the truck will move out pretty good.

Yet, all those “refined” engines can’t last as long. Some people just want a simple engine that lasts. Reliability is a major selling point. Who wants something that’s blown up at 150k? If people know what they are getting who cares if it’s slow. Different strokes for different folks. I just don’t get the hate for it.

Anecdotally, just scroll through the 3rd gen forum. It’s a timing cover issue, blown head gasket, or something else. All 3.5. I think it’s a really good engine but I’m not dying on a hill thinking it’s better. The 2.7 has years of proven reliability. Just check the high mileage threads.

Idk, if a buddies 2019 trd double cab v6 is an average representation of all v6 double cab 4wd's, but my 2020 access cab ran alot stronger....no contest doing roll-ons. I'd just instantly pull away, and keep pulling. This v6 in the access cab is far from slow.

I just got a 4 banger 2022. If you get after it, it will move out. I am more concerned with the auto trans shifting all the time. I've been "rowing" it in S mode on our hilly 2 lane roads. Don't use 6th much. Has there been any auto trans trouble with the 2.7 engine?

    What’s to say the V6 won’t last 150?

This engine is still ancient and quite similar to the 4.slow which seems to last about 200-300k miles. Either way that’s a shit ton of miles.

I’m not saying it won’t last till 150k. They do and that should be the expectation. What I’m saying is the 2.7 is more reliable for longevity. That’s it. I’m not saying the 3.5 sucks. If I felt like that, I wouldn’t have a Tacoma with one.

I’m just saying the 2.7 consistently is represented in super high mileage threads because it’s simplistic. The 2.7 had any kinks worked out years before the 3.5 debuted in the Tacoma. That’s it’s and for some people, that’s valuable. Why do you think so many fleet vehicles are a SR with a 2.7? Likewise, same for farm trucks. It’s because it’s a cheaper vehicle with a proven power train that’s easy to maintain.

All the way to its 5.5k redline, which is 1k lower than the typical 4cyl. in most vehicles made in the last 30 years. It’s pretty much a tractor/industrial engine, big displacement with huge cylinder bores and lots of mass. Low and slow is the key to reliability.

The v6 auto runs low rpm at average highway speeds, how can it not last way past 150k.

I’ve found that message boards are full of people that claim they’ll keep their vehicle 30 years and a million miles, then they sell it in three years.

Agree, I’ve only had mine for 12+ years and 162k miles (at 183k now), but will check back in another 12 years when it hits 400k or so. Not sure I’ll live long enough to put 1 million miles on it at this rate though, but the 2TR-FE might still be in production :)

Not sure how to drive it "right."

Oh, you mean shift it at redline? It's still slow.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
Test drive one and see. Whether you feel is it slow or not comes from what cars you have driven and comparing it to.
