I would go this route too. Supercharger is what 5k? An LS swap would prob be close to 10 but much better.

And we thought a 4.0 S/C was expensive!

    @TopDawg1776 I have a supercharged Pro and love it. It's pretty powerful ... for a V6. It sounds pretty good ... for a V6.

I'll do the 2.85 pulley when my warranty's up, but for now I'm still covered since it was installed by Toyota.
Speaking of, I bought the truck used with the s/c already on it. It maybe added $1k to the price of the truck.

Would I buy & install a blower at full price? Probably not unless I had a fat tax refund or something. It's fun, but it'll never be a Raptor. I like the extra-medium size of the Taco though, so this is as good as it gets.

So what's the benefit of going to the dealer for the TRD tune rather than just using the OBDII flash device that magnuson includes with their kit?

If you get the kit without the Bully Dog it's $400 less. TRD flash is about $100. So saving ~$300 for starters.

Look in the supercharger group buy thread. While many have no issues with the Bully Dog, several have had issues with the Bully Dog. I am one of them.

I remember seeing something somewhere about the tacoma computer only being able to be reflashed once. I thought I saw some people say they were not able to reflash computer after putting on supercharger because it had already been flashed once for a fuel ping update toyota did

Ok Im new here and I dont have a SC Taco. I am kind of interested in making the upgrade, but it will probably be on a 3.4L 99 4runner. I have drove a lot of shit that would run. The Tundra is a powerful truck but the mileage is horrible and cannot be fixed. The Tundra is not even close to muscle car fast, unless it is supercharged. The Tundra does have a great turn radius for its size. So if parking sucks, maybe its just you. Perfect reason to put an 18' door on a 3 car garage. In my opinion a SC 4.0 is a good balance. Ive also owned several LS powered vehicles and the Tundra wont run with LS cars, unless it is supercharged. I doubt if it would hang on the top end. I owned an 08 Silverado LTZ with an intake, exhaust, and Diablo tuner. I got smoked in that truck by a guy from work in a 14 DCSB 4x4 Taco. Stoplight to stoplight.

After having issues with the Bully Dog flash, I bought a used ECU from eBay. The eBay ECU had 30480000 (pre-ping update) and I flashed it to 3YWG4100 (TRD SC) using the Mongoose Pro.

The ping update for my truck is 30480100.

So you can definitely go pre-ping to TRD, but it may not be possible to go post-ping to TRD.

Savings is cool. But what issues did you have with the bully dog/magnuson tune?

First, the Bully Dog / Magnuson tune was dangerously lean. I thought it was something to do with the install or a fuel delivery issue. So I spent a bunch of time and chasing a problem that wasn't there. It wasn't fuel related. It was the tune. It takes a long time for the ECU to go into open loop so there is 5lb of boost for a long period of time while the AFR is still 14.7. Eventually it goes into open loop and AFR falls but it's not gradual like it should be. More like falling off a cliff.

Second, according to Bully Dog and Magnuson, you're supposed to be able to switch between the 3.00 pulley tune and the 2.85 pulley tune, which is a lie. Once you flash the Toyota ECU that's it no way to go back. No matter what you try to do with the Bully Dog, the calibration ID remains.

Took truck to dealer to try to get TRD flash and they can't do it because Bully Dog uses the same calibration ID as Toyota uses. Toyota's calibration update wizard sees the calibration ID for the TRD flash even through it's actually the Bully Dog tune. So it will not even try to do the TRD flash.

So the only way to get the TRD flash after having tried the Bully Dog tune is replace the ECU. In the end, I bought another ECU, a Mongoose Pro and a 2-day subscription to Techstream. Swapped in the ECU which had the stock N/A tune and did the TRD flash. Now the ECU goes into open loop much sooner and more gradually.

There is no magnuson vs trd. They are both the same Eaton Mp90 blowers.

As for urd vs roots, well they both have their strong points.

Google roots super charger, and Centrifugal supercharger.

Get ahold of "Gadget" at URD. He's a personal friend of mine; drop my name if you want to. If you want to test drive one I'm sure he can set you up. And he lives in your side of Maryland.

Magnuson and TRD are the same thing. One has the TRD logo on it; the other one doesn't but they are identical mechanically.

I don't think URD has it's own S/C for the 4.0L Tacoma but they do sell the Magnuson.

But I don't think he has a complete Rotrex kit on the URD webpage.
