I spent the $100.00 and three hours to have the transmission fluid physically checked yesterday at a very good dealer 1.5 hours away yesterday only to find out that mine was at 100%. I've dealt with these dealer Service Advisers (SA) several times now and although two different SA's strongly advised me not to waste the money to have this service performed, I did it anyway. Thanks to all the shitty "advice" from the "experts" here on TW.
Both SA's told me that they seldom see Gen 3 transmissions issues unless people are towing without the ECT on and not in S drive, i.e. overdrive. Also, they specifically see transmission issues with off roaders especially with heavy mods like lifts and ridiculous tires/rims.
Moving forward, I recommend we all take the "expert" advice offered on TW with a huge grain of salt as not every post comes from someone who knows what they are talking about.

How many miles on the transmission?

Take a look at this video from Chris Fix on youtube:

He takes an auto transmission apart and highlights reasons why a transmission can fail if you let the fluid go bad and don't change it soon enough.

Edit: Is your truck still under warranty? If it is you should not have been charged anything to check the fluid.

    IP, I am confused.
Are you upset with service writers at the dealership or with the folks here on TW

    Or worse, all the above?

So, you drove 1.5 hrs there, and they were able to check it without it sitting overnight? How long did you have to wait at the dealer?

Yes what is your reasoning on having it checked? Are there symptoms of it being low such as lurching or slipping?

Could this not have just been put in the original thread instead of making a new one?

There are threads here on how to DIY you could have chosen to follow.

Maybe start a go-fund-me so those who wish can make you whole?

If a dipstick were still available checking would be a non-event anyway.

Here's your problem, OP. You disregarded the first rule of the internet. "Don't believe everything you read on the internet."

I have plenty of issues with the automatic transmission on my brand new Tacoma. But I ain’t spending a dime out of my pocket. That’s what the warranty is for.

Meh. I like to use them for fluid exchanges and such when I can't do it myself. For example, I've got a NASTY sciatica issue right now so I couldn't remove my skids. I brought it to the dealer for my trans / t case / front diff. It was reasonably priced and I know they used the correct fluids. The SA's were friendly and didn't recommend anything stupid to me. I would go back.
