We used to have the Hilux way back in the day. It was 100% utility, adapting to the American market where luxury and comfort took priority, Toyota released the Tacoma. Today the platforms are very similar with the Hylux getting the Diesel, though that Diesel would suffocate under our emissions. The Hylux is still considered more utilitarian forgoing a lot of the comfort items we have with the Tacoma but as costs go down, the platforms are being more and more identical. I'm sure it won't be long until Toyota thinks of using a single truck world wide, similarly to the Ranger.

Nope. Driven them for years overseas. They’re great trucks just like the Tacomas here. People in America tend to complain about dumb stuff though, and other cultures typically are content with what they have.

I saw a few in the UK during a recent visit. There were way more Ford Rangers there though. I personally think the Tacoma looks a lot better!

The interior of the hilux is more like a car, same with fortuner... I’ve seen both and I would say quality is the same... I prefer the taco... and between fortuner and 4runner I prefer the 4runner..

I think the Hilux looks like every non-NA market truck, small, car-like, light, and spartan. I am not a fan of the way it looks but I do like it overall.

I like it’s size, diesel-engine goodness, and the way it’s product marketed and sold.

    1. My Tacoma is larger than the first gen tundra. I dislike the trend of larger vehicles. The new Honda Accord looks close to a 70’s Cadillac. I much prefer the size of the 96-04 Tacoma extra cab.
    2. I love diesels. My several vw tdi’s got +55-mpg and the Hilux diesel is rated at 39-mpg. I’m getting 19-mpg in a good day with my Tacoma. I don’t need high horsepower and I usually cruise at +/- 5mph of speed limit.
    3. My Tacoma has insane tech and creature comforts in it, but I prefer stripped down trucks. I love land cruisers and the 200 series is great but I’ll take a 70 series over it any day. The size and bloated-ness if these vehicles make going off road and overall drivability more difficult and expensive. I’d like my truck to do work and take me places, I don’t want tv screens, hydraulic suspension, etc... but I will take the heated and cooled seats.
    4. The Hilux is sold worldwide. If you ever dream of traveling the world with your truck/motorcycle, it’s easier to find parts if you have a break down.

A much simpler, basic pickup. Everyone in the US wants one because they aren’t available over here. It’s like European car fanatics who drool over our pickups and V8 Challengers, Camaro’s, etc.

    Like, so many.
I’ve used them some in West Africa. They are good trucks. Basic. Capable. They are a favorite among aid workers. I prefer my Tacoma.
