Is the K&N engine filter worth the cost ?

I plan to change my engine filter tomorrow. I'm at 30k and it calls for it. Should I buy the $22 filter at autozone or the $50 K&N ? What's the benefits of the K&N ?

 

Be ready for a shit storm in here. Most, myself included, run the regular Toyota filter, or a premium paper filter such as NAAPA gold or simular.

 

I've used K&N air filters in the past and honestly didn't feel a performance upgrade. However, you'll never have to buy another one, just a cleaning kit. Personally, I just use quality paper filters. JMO.

I would buy neither one of them.... get OEM Toyota air and oil filters....

 

The benefits are more air flow, the potential issues are they allow some particles into the intake. My personal experience is the extra air flow is not worth the risk.

 

You do realize Toyota doesn't produce either product, right? That they are produced by a low bidder (and likely multiple as each particular contract is re bid) and labeled Toyota?

 

Stick with OEM. With a K&N you have to oil it and the MAF's tend to be picky on the oil.

 

Factory Toyota OEM filter or a premium paper one equivalent too.

 

In fact the TRD oil filter is a K&N.

 

OP is talking about his air filter if i'm not mistaken.

 

Yea, I been using them for many years, also tried K&N and TRD.... but most of the test show OEM filtering better than all others tested.

 

I use oem. I've heard use of k&n over longer periods allows smaller particulates into the engine causing oil consumption.

 

I used an Airaid Short ram intake which was an oiled filter, and I'm now using a K&N filter (Snorkel, had to dismount the Short Ram). I still clean it every 20,000kms so hopefully it doesn't let too much crap through. Engine still pulling strong with almost 300,000 kms on it.

 

I bought a K&N air filter just to go back to the OME paper ones. I recommend you save your money and just use the paper ones and replace as needed.

I ran an AFE Pro dry drop in, then an AFE Pro Dry Cold Air Intake with the Pro dry cone for 30,000 miles. Other than noise, I didn't feel any noticeable performance gains. What I did notice was a considerable amount more dirt when I cleaned my MAF and throttle bottle when compared to the paper filter. When I switched back to the paper filter, there was a considerable amount LESS dirt on the MAF and TB.

Paper filters more, keeps the engine happy.
