Is the manual transmission that much better than the auto transmission?

I have never owned an Automatic nor do I desire one. I would guess in my lifetime that I have less than 1% of driving miles behind the wheel of automatics, longest stretch was a 30 day rental car which was sooooo boring.

I like driving a MT. It is important to me. If I had been planning on getting an AT I would certainly have waited to test-drive the new Ranger. Since Ford isn't going to offer a stick I had no reason to wait on buying a Tacoma.

I've had some interesting get offs. I know what you are saying though.

Throttle steering, picking lines, and all that is fun. It makes me laugh when I come up quick behind some sports sedan on a highway ramp where they're not even bothering with what they got.

My friend mainly messed with small outboards, but he was building a flat bottom boat for a long time. He eventually gave up on that also. The motor sat in the garage for a long time. I always wanted to hear it fire up. We called it the Family Budget Buster (FBB). He would always say that he never knew if it was going to run forever or just a few moments. The person that bought it dyno'ed it with a supercharger. It is still running well locally. The boat went to Australia.

The first time I went to one of the boat races, a kid flipped and her hand got gashed on the prop. She recovered, but a few more millimeters . . . I get the attraction though.

Sweet Le Mans. My aunt had one in canary yellow / black vinyl when I was a kid. I was floored when she sold it.

I sometimes wish my truck was a Manual for when I'm hauling dirt bikes over the pass or heading up the mountains to go snowboarding, but otherwise I enjoy having the Auto. The girlfriend gets to use it if she ever needs it for work too so it works out. This is actually the first automatic I've ever owned and I had been searching for a clean first gen for so long, I just took it be it was Auto or Manual.

My daily driver (Civic) is a Manual and that gets my fix in for bangin' gears, but it's so underpowered.. it's almost a necessity lol.

I traded my auto on a manual. No regrets other than I should have gotten the MT from day 1.

I can: Steer, take a bite of hot dog and downshift to accelerate all at the same time. Three simultaneous actions, two hands. MT coordination FTW.

Yep, especially if you have the Sport or lower model and it is not my money . The MT in the Sport and OR (so does AT in OR & Pro) have the 8.75" Rear and the MT has 4.10 gears vs the 3.80.

Safety is not why I ride or not ride. Speed is not why I shift.

I was stoked to get a mildly moist commute in today even though a lady in a Legacy tired to roll into me in a roundabout this morning. She was then pissed about it for some reason.

For me, it is being one with the bike, setting up for corners, getting leaned over, and throttling out with a smile every damn time.

True story from 2009. I was in a massive squall on my way home. Rain drops were hurting through my leathers. A mile from home, a long dead evergreen came down in front of me. I walked away feeling better than before I went in. In the same squall several miles away, another tree came down and killed a lady in a minivan.

Driving my truck with a coffee mug and a sleeve of chocolate Hostess mini donuts would give a driving instructor an aneurism. Sort of flies in the face of the argument that driving a manual is about staying alert and engaged, eh? In any case, juggling food or whatever while driving a manual is certainly something you have to have grown up doing to be capable.
