I just purchased a stock 2020 TRD Off Road Tacoma and want to take it out on the trails. (Imagine that!)
I had a base model 2013 Tacoma that I purchased an after market skid plate for and took some pretty heavy hits on it. Will OEM skid plate hold up, and does it offer sufficient protection?
I'm far too old to want to crawl around in the dirt to try to fix things. LOL
BTW, I plan to put sliders on my new truck as one of the very first mods!
    Thanks!

The sheet metal guard on the OR is flimsy enough that I can bend it with my hands. I never actuality hit a rock hard with it, but I don’t think it would fair well. I upgraded to the TRD 1/4” aluminum skid plate.

It's merely there for the pebbles from the road on the way to the mall.

Splash guard is a much more appropriate term than skid plate for what comes stock on TRD off roads.

First off u need a lift and some sliders .. better tires . Stock setup is good for trails not off-roading .

I never recall hitting mine on anything and like to think I take some solid lines. I still dented and scratched that thing haha

Seems crazy to me to add sliders yet keep the OEM splash guard.

I bit the bullet and ordered skids the same time I did the sliders. The stock one is a gravel guard at best.

The OEM plate does offer a level of protection. I did sliders, tires/wheels/lift, and front bumper w/winch before I replaced my OEM skid plate. However I was spending a lot of time in the desert or on fire roads, so there was little risk.

I’ve used my oem skid plate on my TRD Off Road a couple times. Sure, it’s dented and scratched but it did it’s job. Nothing has punctured it and I’ve landed the thing on rocks to the point that the weight of the truck broke the rocks. It’ll do it’s job, it’s just not gonna be pretty after it’s been used.

I dented my stock OR skid in the desert with no obstacles.. So, no, not that good.

I bent mine bad the first time I went out. Hit one rock and folded it up and squeaked real bad over any bump after. I know others have beat the piss out them. But they mold to the crossmember and cause other issues. Removed it and put on the trd aluminum one. I’ve hit this one pretty good and holding up well. Few scratches not deformed. And I’ve plowed a mud rock berm with it and still good.

Drobe on a "road" (historically a stagecoach route) that had a 100 ft all-rocks stretch and caused this. My steel (not aluminum) RCI engine skid took this and did not bend, engine stayed safe.

It’s more of a metal splash shield. Mine dented really easily when I scraped a rock

The factory splash pans are fine for road work. They certainly won’t protect anything off road
