City traffic and slow off roading makes automatics a much nicer choice as you get older!

Thanks for the kind words... I write these things in different ways because I know we all read stuff or understand it told to us in different ways!

This helped a lot. I was thinking I was going to have to get the auto box. I'd much rather have a standard trans. My current '14 TRD sport doesn't have the ATRAC stuff and I didn't know about how it worked. Now it looks like I can get the 6-speed manual and the ATRAC will work like the crawl control.

Your only stuck being able to get the DCSB TRD OR in a Manual. That's the only trim the TRD OR comes in, which is why I am getting a TRD Sport. I would like the ATRAC and rear locker, but the DCSB is the deal breaker. #savethemanuals #noautoplease

One thing to keep in mind. I have had 7 Tacoma's and the "Toyota truck" before them. Every one, without exception, was excellent off road. If you buy an SR auto four with 4 wd, you get an excellent off road truck compared to anything in it's class regardless of what options "they" come with. Don't feel like you are remiss and traveling " light", just because you don't get the off road package. It's more about experience and preparation then equipment.

    This!

Also, the 5 ft. "short bed" (really the standard bed in a double cab), holds as much as the 6 ft. bed in the first gen Tacomas... as it is wider and deeper in the second gen. I was sure I needed to add the bed extender for my gear when I switched to a double cab from my 2001 Xtra Cab... NOT SO! I easy fit all my work or camping gear in the new truck's 5 ft. bed.

Do you think the Atrac and 4x2 locker will be good enough for most offroad obstacles or is 4wd still recommended?

I love a-trac! Got me up a muddy hill, off cambered, between trees with no problem. Try that fully locked without being the pin ball against the trees .

A locker is a temporary get out of jail free card that is useful but no substitute for 4 wd. Atrac is a 4 wd component. The standard 2 wd with electronic limited slip mode is really good and in my opinion. Alol you need. I don't feel having a locker on a 2wd vehicle is worth the expense ove a limited slip or 4 wd.
Never go true off roading ( dirt roads ) only with just a 2 wd anything.( a tractor with calcium loaded rear wheels might be an exception)

Exactly. It's more difficult maintaining steerage with wheels locked, whether it be the center differential or an axle differential.

4x4 is more than double the drive traction. You have much more weight on the front tires.

People here keep saying Crawl Control replaced ATRAC but that's not true. Multi Terrain Select replaced ATRAC. MTS is several different versions of ATRAC.

Same reason my next door neighbor bought a F350 4x4 crew cab long bed, just to put lifting blocks on them then NEVER EVER tows anything or go off road

I see a lot of Tacoma's that fit that description. An F350 Long bed is huge, so a small lift and slightly larger tires make it look like it should, whether it goes off road or not. I'm okay with that.

I agree but he doesn't have a small lift, more like 6"+ lift and huge tires/chrome rims to go with it. ehh he's a good neighbor for the most part though

Yeah, that's too much for my tastes. Most SD's and Ram HD's really only need 35's to look right, and they can accomplish that with a 2" level kit. GMC's need a bit more. Diesel's handle 35's very well due to the outrageous torque, with minimal fuel economy loss and are really all you need. Anything larger than that is just for show, imo. But, like they say, to each their own.
