Is the pcv valve supposed to be super loud?

I’ve never taken a pcv valve apart, but I cannot think of any reason that it would make a lot of noise failing or not failing. Have you used your stethoscope on any other Tacoma to verify the noise is unusual?

Are you talking about a purge valve or pcv?
    I never heard clicking pcv.

Positive crankcase ventilation valve. Located drivers side valve cover at the back . Place the stethoscope on it and it’s rattling clanking like crazy. Move away from the pcv valve and the noise gets harder and harder to hear

It shouldn't make any noise. I have replaced my PCV return hose and added an oil catch can on my truck soon after I got my truck to prevent bad oil going back into the engine.

Exactly. I’ve never heard a pcv valve this loud in any car. It has a foam isolator on top of it to muffle any faint noise it might make. Not supposed to be loud enough that it is louder then the direct injection and d4s

you are hearing valve train noise that is being picked up by the PCV valve at the valve cover. The valve itself isn’t making noise. It’s acting as a sound chamber.

Disagree, after listening to others on youtube(non tacoma) pcv noise mine is the exact same noise, it comes on and off every second or so sometimes staying on for few min. The valve train is smooth sounds normal. This noise is not valves or cams. If it was the engine would have destructed by now. Just has a bad shake at idle. If you put the truck in gear the pcv valve rattle gets louder and worse, and a rough idle

The PCV valve could be cracked causing the noise and a vacuum leak which causes rough idle.

Starting to wonder if you’re right. I’ll find out soon new part and hose come in tomorrow. We’ll see. No idea how the assembly line could make that mistake though

Vacuum pump. mine does it. There's a recall from Toyota but good luck having a dealer acknowledge the fault

Changed out my pcv valve and hose tonight. Rpm vibrations on acceleration are much improved, and the rattling/ratcheting noise from the engine are gone. Idle in gear is still little “lumpy” though. Overall I’d say it’s a big improvement. Shaking the old pcv valve next to the new one and you can hear a very audible difference in how they sounded.

I’m glad you got some improvement from the new PCV valve hopefully the idle will smooth out when the ecm learns the change. If there was a vacuum leak the ecm will have to adjust.

Good point, time will tell. I’m not expecting super smooth idle but mine just seems a bit to “harsh” only in gear though. In park it’s smooth as glass for the most part.

What does a pcv valve sound like when you shake it?

A rattle. The original was more muffled, the new oem replacement was moving more freely it seems
