    Hello everyone

I just got a 2016 TRD sport DCLB(without JBL package)
The problem is that the truck won't let me lock the key fob in the truck...

I surf and am used to taking my actual key off my key ring and locking the fob in the truck( in previous vehicles)

Is there a way to be able to lock the fob in the truck ? i looked through the manual and was unable to find an option on this.

    Thanks in advance!

I find, generally, the driver's are just dumber than the trucks are.

There is no doubt about that.

I was instructed specifically by my dealer not to leave the fob inside the truck, as it will drain the battery inside the fob.

You could get a locking hitch hide a key thing

I'm sure there is a solution that isn't leaving the fob inside and doors unlocked.

But fob battery wear? It's a $3 battery.

Why not leave the fob at home and just work with the bare metal key? That's basically what you are trying to do anyway.

While I don't have (or want) a fancy fob thingy, I do have the remote lock/unlock deal. I have one of those on one ring with a key. The other key I have on a key ring that has about a 2" nylon lanyard and a small carabiner.

I take the plain jane when I go kayaking or wade fishing, and just put it in a zippered pocket.

16s Have push button start and no key, so the hitch lock might be the best bet....or if he has a tonneau cover, he could lock the fob in the bed and take the tailgate key with him!

No key at all? Smart key is all you get?

No key hole in door, or ignition switch on column? IE no manual back up option?

Yeah i have had a little lock box mounted in beds before.. it sounds like this is going to be the best option.

They have a key hole in the driver's door and a push button ignition

I dont have a '16 but generally car makers will make smart keys with a normal key inside of them in case the battery runs out. that's how it was on my Altima. Usually its concealed within the smart key.

The key hole on the drivers door is for when the battery goes dead in the fob. if this happens you can still start the truck by holding the fob next to the push start button. Lexus has been using this since 2010 and sells a fob that is flat and looks like a credit card so you can keep it in your wallet. You might call you Toyota dealer and see if they offer it as well.

Most people would rather leave the keys in the truck and only take the fob.

Sounds like most folks you know don't intentionally go in salt water like the OP and myself?

It's not that great on gee-wizardry stuff. ;)

T4R or the recently sold 2007 BMW had a key for ignition. Key available for drivers door & trunk/hatch on both inside key fob. Never a problem...
