Shit, you right. xD I cant believe I overlooked that. With that in mind, I'd go with a lockbox in the bed, but make sure the bed isn't included in the radius for the key.

Yes. if the fob is not present the doors won't unlock the the truck won't start.

My fob is on the key. I tried leaving one in the ignition with the truck running then tried the other fob/key to lock the door while I went into the convenience store. The button would not lock the door but I could lock it with the key. I don't like carrying both big key/fob's around but I'll grin and bare it during the winter when I stop in and out of places in town.

(My truck does not have the push button start.)

Park truck, step out with window down, turn off ignition, from outside the truck, press auto up on window and throw key in the vehicle as the window goes up.

Just an idea... Would this work?

The transponder is built into the "fob" of the smart key. You can not drive the vehicle without it being present.

No, if the key was locked inside the vehicle all someone needs to do is pull the handle and the doors will unlock. Then they would simply be able to hit the start button and drive off into the sunset.

Toyota fobs do not work while the ignition is on. This is why it will not lock while running. Yea you can lock it with the spare key Turing it to lock the doors but your gonna have to carry 2 keys. If you have a remote start or after market keyless entry system added you can lock it while it's running. Or use the pit stop mode of the remote start, then pull out the key and the truck will stay running. Then simply get out and lock it up

There is a way to turn smart key off. Then you should be able to lock it inside. Or pull the battery out of the fob and hold it to the ignition to start. I can find out how to disable it later when I get home.

Even if the key is inside the vehicle you cant unlock from the outside door handle. Once the fob is picked up from the inside oscillator the outter door handle functions are canceled. Other wise someone could come up and unlock your door while you are trying to be locked inside.

A foil pack might prevent the fob from talking to the car thus eliminating all concerns.

Toll highway transponders are shipped in foil packs to prevent them incurring charges during shipping.

Might work and be a super easy solution.

Is the truck smarter than you, or are you just not smart enough for the truck?!

All joking aside this is what I do when I go in the water. First off, why would you even take your FOB in the water with you? Seriously? I have a tonneau cover so i leave my FOB in the small storage compartment in the bed on the passenger side. The FOB is far enough that it won't work, so some random person can't walk up and just open the truck. I take the tailgate lock (this key doesn't have a chip, etc.) in the water with me. When I get out of the water I open the tailgate, grab the FOB, and there you go. If you don't have a tonneau buy yourself a lock box like the one pictured below, and hang it somewhere on the back of your truck, far enough away so the FOB won't work.

Should be able to turn the fob off, hold the lock button, and press the unlock twice. Leave the fob in the truck and use the key to lock the doors?

I wouldn't keep the fob near the truck it maybe close enough to open the doors. This is a serious issue us surfers face lol! I'm thinking hiding it somewhere under a rock or something away from the truck.

One reason I don't mess with newer vehicles. Too much electronic crap that makes it hard to do anything.

Been surfing for years and used the Master Lock Box and honestly, it really isn't that much of a pain.

And to those who keep saying they wouldn't buy the truck because they surf and don't want to leave the FOB, I'll say it again, if you leave the fob in the bed or a lockbox on the back of the truck its well enough away from the front door and won't work.

Heads up: those hitch safe are easily opened with any tool if you know what you are doing. Lot's of surfers had their cars/valuables stolen.
