Ya, the fam in the SFO area are paying 9k a month and had 550k down. They are packed in like sardines too...not my style or budget.

I don't know about the pay being directly related to time in position. I guess unless you could be assured the administration/management are doing their job, it's about the only way to provide fair & equal treatment....??? Otherwise, it comes to playing who's the favorite child & relies on unbiased reviews...right?

We get tenure after 2 years in California. They have to make sure they want you during those 2 years because they have to keep you for the rest of your life unless you want to leave or you commit some heinous crime against a minor. How do you think teaching performance goes for the below average teachers after tenure is reached? They can't be fired for performance related issues. If they do want to fire a tenured teacher, it takes years of paperwork and hearings. All you need to do during those years to keep your job is show improvement from where you were. Those teachers get paid just as much as I would at their year and column

my take is like this, if your happy with your wage why do you care what others make??? Working pay for performance creates animosity between co workers and I hate the fact raises could be based on favoritism. With a contract x,y and z is in writing eliminates favoritism and animosity.

Fair and equal are two separate beasts.

They are two ends of a spectrum. Fair isn't equal, and equal isn't fair.

Ya as a cat that moves around there are worse (and better) places but, what's the point of bitching.

My area now isn't the greatest but it works for me as I'm close enough to shit I like to do on a regular basis and mostly close enough to the other things I can still do it on my 3 days off a week. Oxford is a cool little town.

BTW how did you end up with ur user name? Fan? Former resident?

And hey, you'll always have Tom T. Hall right? :)

Wow, sounds as if being tenured could be as bad as some think unions already are...

I don't know why they bitch. I'd rather them move, or do something about it. I'm cool with whatever.

My username? I am originally from Birmingham. Was kidnapped north of the Mason Dixon by my mother. Ended up with a pretty good spread/situation...and have simply stayed. What little network I have has created comfort, and I haven't brought myself to create a new network elsewhere. I may not have a choice however. So, possibly Helena or Pelham will be the next stop.

Sadly, the American culture has turned itself away from the trades. For the past 2-3 decades everyone was steered to college. At the same time tradesmen were/are portrayed as less than equal in the workforce. So...we have millions of overeducated young folks, who have no desire to work hard or get their hands dirty. And we supplement the shortage with immigrant labor (legal and illegal), Driving trade wages down to the point that working at McDonalds or a shoe store pays what a carpenter/plumber/mason, etc makes.
    Not a good scenario IMO

agreed. I mean, I sit here at work, waiting for a phone to ring, wasting time on this forum, and I make more than my cousin who is a journeyman electrician, at the same company for over 25 years. I've been here for less than 3 years. He has a valuable education, with skills usable in more than just the working world, I can sell you a casket....lol.

In 1985 I was making $18.00-$25.00 per hour as a carpenter....that's THIRTY effing years ago!!!! Today, a good carpenter in most markets is lucky to earn $14.00-$18.00. And you know why, but it's politically incorrect to talk about it.

I'll just be honest, I probably couldn't keep up with carpentry. It would probably kill me to get into it now.

It amazes me that people who do custom, one off design and tool and die work make what they make, unless they branch out into a niche and have the money to buy their own machines. That stuff is so cool.

I'm not sure if the egg or the chicken came first Larry. Did the college educated vacate trades because they wanted a bigger piece of the pie and/or are lazy or were wages driven down because of an influx of people willing to work for less or the same over time (for whatever reason).

Not sure where y'all fall but, I tend to lean more towards the U6 number re unemployment...it's ~twice the commonly reported rate and has been since at least 2008. I don't understand why this 10%+ number wouldn't (if they're not) pursue a trades type job unless there's enough saturation in those skill that are hiring at a lower cost to make the return less than the benefit of not working.

I do think overall unless you have an art in the trades or otherwise have a skill or certificate that allows you privilege others don't have wages haven't kept up with inflation in general.

The academia elite and politicians/media who live in a bubble caused the problem.
Not everyone needs a college education. Not everyone can be an astronaut...someone has to build the rocket ship.

Can you still buy a casket that is literally just a pine box? I mean, it's in my will that I want to be cremated. So I don't want anybody spending a lot of $$ on some fancy-ass padded oak-clad thing with brass hardware just so they can toss it in the furnace with me. :notsure:

    Or a hospital bed? Hillenbrand?

I live near a Batesville Casket manufacturing facility in Batesville, Mississippi...it's a decent employer in a small town of only 2,600. Last job I saw them post in the paper started at $75k as a shift supervisor/manager which isn't bad when one considers our low cost of living. That small town also has a GE Aviation facility making engines for corporate aircraft and a Parker Hannifin (aviation & automotive) all decent jobs in a small town in the middle of nowhere.

Yes. But there are much more cost effective options. There are now "cremation containers" that are literally a cardboard box.

Side Note: There is new technology coming out that is somewhat sci-fi where your remains are actually melted with chemicals, leaving a white ash once dried. In this case, there is no need for any sort of casket, or container for cremation. Simply place the body in a special bag...(less expensive) and place into a high pressure tank, add chems, remove paste, let dry, and then place in urn. Shake like a snow globe for effect....

Last time I was involved in buying a casket you could but it may be locally regulated...???

We cremated my father about a year ago and no casket was bought or used.

I live in the middle of two players in the casket game. Batesville Casket's home office, in conglomerate with Hillenbrand is about 1 hour west of me. My employer is one hour north of me.

Batesville will forever be the number 1 big dog in this industry, because they are owned by Hillenbrand which makes, like, every single hospital bed, ever...so they have an endless stream of funding.
