No problemo. I had my heart set on Australia or possibly Sweeden. Thanks for the heck, I dunno what that was... Heads up? Idle threat from a keyboard warrior? I'm kind of lost.

Timmy I see you're fairly new to TW so you may not be aware that you're response to my question, while extensive, is full of TW violations that could result in the thread being locked or user(s) being banned.

I'd like to respond to your points but, for two reasons I won't. First, I don't want to be banned & second, your passion/galvanized view would make it pointless.

I would like to know how long you've either been in or have at least conducted business with unions or their members...basically trying to understand how you arrive at you conclusion.

And OZ thanks for the smile.

I actually come from a long and proud? line of tradesmen, mostly able bodied screwups... A few admirable ones, but that still hasn't made me advance on the list in any sort of meaningful way in the past six years.

I will gladly admit to being a knucklehead and a huge stoner when I was a kid, as we're all of my friends. Said friends have all somehow managed to weasel their way in to either Ford Stamping in Ford Heights, or Assembly at the 130th and Torrence Av. Plant in Chicago. The ones I take issue with are the friends who got into USW up in Northwest Indiana (Mostly Arcelor Mittal, but I think one is over at Calumet/Sugar Steel), they're all idiots, and I mean that in every sense of the word. The bit about the dude showing up drunk and getting his suspension paid off is 100% true. He's an overhead crane operator at Mittal. And I have two friends, well one friend (the idiot with the Ram) and his brother in law, both are total cokeheads that work for the railroads. one got a DUI and cried 'I have a problem' when he got caught with an open container and an eightball in his work truck (F350 rail rider) paid rehab, and after keeping his nose clean, back working, drinking and coking like nothing happened. The other didn't actually get himself in trouble, but that's because he's some sort of 'supervisor' and doesn't seem to ever do anything useful. He just Snapchats all day.

As for the brainwashed kids, My friend's dad is some big union hotshot that's always at rallies with big inflatable rats and other nonsense to go along with his misguided proselytization, and she hangs on every word he says... Yet she can't get in and works for her boyfriend's psychotic parents in their craptastic body shop.

I'm simply a believer that if you're willing to work and be responsible, and work an honest day's work and not whine that you're 'only' making time and a half... You're a better person than the supplicant zombie that depends on some double talking flim flam man to get their butt out of a sling whenever they do something that would result in immediate termination and legal action in the real world.

It's honestly more of a disgust than an actual hatred.

And as for getting the banhammer, I really don't care. I have Google, and the two times I attempted to buy something from another member, one apparently lacked basic English skills to say 'I already sold it but am too stupid to edit my post', and one was too lazy to ship a set of nerf steps even though I was willing to let him cornhole me on shipping.

    So... Yeah.

Do what you will, I really couldn't care either way.

Oh right. I live about 60 miles south of the communist state of Chicago, but I work in the city more often than not... The nonsense with the teachers unions striking, the political corruption, and the self serving attitude that has consistently tossed a wrench into the works of the Chicago public schools, streets and sanitation, and all of the other nonsense that makes Chicago the laughing stock of planet earth has somewhat jaded my half libertarian half anarchist bachelor's degree having brain to the point where I've got no problem telling people what I've read between the lines.

Also known as: when keeping it real goes terribly wrong.

I'm going to bed. I have to drive 90 miles each way to Christmas with my Anglo Saxon father's family and be the only grumpy Native American guy in the room.

If I'm not banhammered, I'll PM you. I like this debate, and you seem to have more than 2 neurons to rub together.

I can't expat, however I fell in love with Salt Spring Island, BC. Super nice people, the pubs were great- nothing like what we have here. The forests and ocean are unspoiled (no thanks to certain pols who want to commercialize). So, I'm one Yank that has to stay put.

Sounds to me more like a choice of friend issue, not a just union issue. Personal responsibility is lacking in a large number of American citizens, some in unions, some not.

Changed my mind about the ability to have civil discourse on a touchy subject.
All that in a truck site. Imagine.

    Merry Christmas all.

I see a lot of broad strokes and categorizing of union members above. Money doesn't teach basic skills in humanity. Just like being financially successful doesn't mean kids aren't problems either. Our nation is suffering from a me culture. Mery Christmas. Enjoy your family and friends.

They don't have shop classes in most high schools nowadays, the only reason I ever learned to fix things was because I was into motorcycles. They're basically training people for office jobs.
the fact is any idiot can go to college today if they have money. It proves nothing. I know many blue collar workers who are far more intelligent than most college students. I feel bad for most post graduates. They don't have the job security they were granted 30 years ago. Most millenials will have to have multiple careers in their lifetime and will never accumilate the wealth their parents did. Either way, Merry Christmas!

The problem is it usually requires a lot of money to get advanced degrees. Med school is incredibly hard and it also cost a pretty penny. There is no way you can pay for it yourself. I agree you need to work hard for an advanced degree, but you need a lot if support.

Had a high school teacher who told us that we can't be anything we want when we grow up on one of the first days of class.

A lot of people didn't like the guy because he was both tough and unconventional, but I think he was a much-needed reality check for almost everyone.

While I agree, money is not required. That's why people my age graduated a couple years ago with $100k worth of debt.

I didn't hear of anyone in my graduating class getting denied for a massive student loan, and many had parents who (like mine), weren't poor, but drove older vehicles, didn't have an extravagant house, and were always pinching pennies to be able to pay for day-to-day stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, some colleges today will allow any student to enter as long as they have $$...

This one is fun... Student blames parents for blowing her college fund.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/a-college-student-blows-inheritance-bert-show-205833329.html

The world may be a better place if she'd just go away. Makes you wonder what her parents were doing while she was growing up (or maybe she still is).

Depends on the school. You still need a high school diploma at least. And it doesn't help you out any once there. The 6 year graduation rate at my school is like 50% or slightly less since they let 90% of applicants in.
