So other than diploma/ged not really requiring a certain SAT or ACT?? I got this story while sitting at Toyota service from a prof...kinda blew my mind and made me wonder if she was being serious.

You can attend a community college even as a drop out. No requirement as long as you take a placement exam.

I'm all for higher education but, seems to be a large crop of people are using it to put off the real world...

I have heard but haven't confirmed Montana colleges legally have to take anyone who graduated from a Montana high school. I came from out of state and the requirements were pretty low, the requirements were something like a 2.5 gpa and a low sat or act score. They will even bend those requirements though because out of staters bring so much money in. It results in a crazy high drop out rate because they end up accepting anyone willing to pay, giving little care to how well they would do.

Problem with college is the government guarantees the student loans. As a result colleges can charge absurd amount of money to attend. If the loans weren't backed by the government and nobody could afford to go, colleges would have to lower prices so people could attend. If not they would go out of business. The government is what's driving up the cost for college. Also many degrees in my opinion are useless. college it's not for everyone and that's ok.

In Canada the provinces control tuition. That eliminates most of the problems you speak of.

Whether you have money or not, they'll take anyone. If you don't have money, you can apply for student aid that will not only cover tuition, but will give you cash to spend as well. Beyond that, they'll give federal student loans to anyone that asks. We had guys that would show up and sleep through class and it counted as job training whether they passed or not - so show up and sleep and your check keeps coming in the mailbox.

    None needed.
... I know why unions are in place. Now explain why there still needed. The problems which arose, making unions advantageous for the worker, are now all covered by Federal law. Union and nonunion alike must abide by the same laws, except those imposed by the free market.

This is especially perplexing when you have state and federal employee unions.

Actually, see my post 136 that got covered up. If your truck was built at the Baja plant, your tailgate was union made.

So far, just a Hard Hat tonneau cover. Looking for mud guards and nerf boards.
Anyone graduating with a tremendous amount of debt is just plain lazy. Exceptions are law and medical schools. These "kids" don't want to work. You hear it all the time. "Who is going to pay for my college?". I've got an idea. YOU!!!

    why does it matter? lol
I'm actually happy it isn't. It would likely be more money.
Besides after seeing what being union made did with GM and protecting the workers when they are going to get drunk on their lunch break and coming back and ending up leaving empty bottles in the doors, NO thank you.

can't speak for American schools, but to be fair Canadian schools are insanely expensive and over priced. Especially when comparing the average tuition now to when anyone born in the 50s-70s went to school. Anyone 80s or 90s born is paying way more.
And to top it off, that degree doesn't even get you a job anymore. A lot of the people I went to high school with that went to university etc for either teaching, engineering or kinesiology (which seems to be a big one now) aren't finding jobs, and they still have all their tuition to pay.

BUT I will agree very few seem to want to work. Especially any job that is physically demanding. The amount of people I see coming into the trades that are lazy fucks and never want to do anything and have no motivation to learn are pathetic. The amount of apprentices I see that are almost licensed electricians that still can't do anything because they have no care in the world to learn how to do anything besides handle material is pathetic. A lot of the guys I went to school with that cant find work I tell them I can get them a job with me and they all say the same. "No I don't want to do that, you guys need to wake up too early." Cry me a fuckin river so what I wake up at 4 30-5am, and guess what I usually work 6 days if not 7 days a week. Do I care that I don't get to go out with you guys and waste $400 every weekend drinking, nope. Thats why you have a shitty retail minimum wage job even after your masters degree and have no car or anything to show for, and I'm about to buy a new tacoma full out straight cash. Because you are too busy trying to pay off your tuition and can't grow up and still want to go party every weekend and not save a penny.

People my age are pathetic and useless. I find it sad when they ask me to help them with something around their place, or parents place and I'm not helping them with shit...I'm doing everything.

    /rant

I always like when the guys I work with say union does it better...yet really they do not. There is good and bad workers in both union and non union. BUT working both I have found that the good employee keeps a job non union while the shit one keeps looking. Where as union idiotic shits that can't even read blue prints are being paid the same as me and I need to spend days fixing their fuck ups because they can't even pull wire properly and put wire labels on correct.
But hey its a price to pay for better pay, benefits and a pension.

    QUOTED FOR TRUTH

there were numerous articles about it in the paper before GM shit the bed.

This is the part that kills me. More than once I've offered to help people, mostly friends, get into my career field. Odds are good (90%+) that if I drag someone in who is certificated and has a few years experience, they will get hired. They all have the same shitty exuse you noted above. Seems many in the world will only work a job they consider fun. Odds are, IMO, if it's that fun it's a hobby (or at best low paying) it's called a JOB for a reason. My job only requires either OJT of some form (my method was working for a company others go through the military) or a short period in school (<24 months) to become certificated. The company I work for can't find enough new hires to fill the open slots. There are literally 1,000s that do the same job as me at the company I work for and we are ALWAYS short handed and I'm not talking 1 or 2 heads...I mean we often have 10, 20 or 30 open slots a week. But, it can be a dirty job and you will work outside in any and all types of weather. Additionally, it's a 24/7 operations so weekends, nights and holidays are just part of it. But, in return you have a decent salary (base is >$100k), job security, decent benefits that includes good insurance, a company pension and 401 with match. I work a few but, not many guys in their early 20s and that's a problem on the horizon...a shortage. It's good for me but, I just don't understand why people aren't more concerned with 128 hours a week outside work more than they care about the 40 hours a week at work.
