If the radiator is bad, flow would be bad, too.

Some of the silicone sealants can react with the soft rubber gaskets that come on the T stat and eventually cause a leak. Its really not a good idea to use it, unless the manufacture requires it.

True but, what would be the cheapest to fix? He could even pull the tstat and check for flow.

    Hi everyone,

When I got home last night, before actually changing out the t-stat, I decided to turn on the engine and try and see if it would overheat again.

I ran the truck hard, accelerating fast, and even left it on idle for several minutes, and nothing. I can't get it to run hot anymore... While I'm a little happy that it's running fine now, I'm mostly worried that I can't trust my truck at the moment.

Has anyone ever run into a problem where it overheats just one time? When the overheat happened, I was stuck in dead-stop traffic for about 10 minutes. As the needle was approaching the red, I pulled over and let it cool down. When I opened the hood, I realized the overflow tank cap was popped off (which might explain the radiator smell I'd been smelling for a few days). Can the cap being popped off be the cause of the overheat? Is that why it's running fine now???? Please help!!! Thanks!!

    TACO2003,

Thanks for that testing tip. I'd rather first do that than take everything apart for nothing.

By the way, I tried to recreate the overheating condition last night and had no luck. The truck is running perfect and I can't think of what it could be. I can't get it to heat up again. I started a new post regarding a "one-time" overheat problem:

    THanks,

    Thank you for everyone's input!!!

I ended up removing the t-stat and throwing a new Toyota t-stat, which only took about an hour or so, but it still overheated a bit. After comparing the airflow from my truck to an older 1999 Tacoma that I have sitting, I noticed the incredible difference. Went over to the parts store, changed out the fan clutch, and my tank is back up and running incredibly AWESOME.

Thank you to everyone!!! Appreciate everyone's help and input!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
So the fan clutch was bad also??

Ahh I'm starting to get discouraged here . I now changed out the t-stat and fan clutch, and while it did improve the airflow tremendously, it overheated again!!!!

I have no idea what to do????

One more cheap trick. Have you replaced the radiator cap? It works as a relief valve. If the pressure gets to high, it will open and allow the boiling mix to dump into your plastic reserve tank. If it's not working, pressure will build up and cause you to overheat. See the below link to help you understand the cooling system.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the input. I just now fixed the problem..FINALLY!!!

So aparently, the lower radiator hose was very old and weak, and it had been collapsing due to the suction pressure from the water pump. I NEVER noticed it before, but I also had no idea that that was something to check for. I changed it out and it's now running great. Not a single sign of overheating. In fact, the needle seems to be even lower than the middle now!! :)

TACO2003...Thanks for that link!! Very helpful!!!
