I didn't see much chat about replacing my horn. Is there a vid or thread for horn replacement?

I bought the Hella set. Comes with a relay.

Of course I don't have a Toyota schematic, does the stock horn have a relay? Probably not.

Stock horn does have a relay, I found it a while ago but I forget exactly which one it is

I haven’t changed the horn in my truck. In previous vehicles I just swapped the horn(s). They usually came as a pair. One high note, one low note.

I found the horn info in the pdf manual! Schematic on page 6331

Yes there is a relay - thank you. Will swap in Hella horns when warm weather returns.

You don’t need to use the relay, as stated it already has one. You can easily just add them also, which is the route I went. Just make sure to calculate the total amps so you can change out the correct fuse side.

I think I had to go up like 3-5 amps on my fuse. It blew after a nice long honk at someone running a red light. Good thing I was watching as he casually made the turn well into my green.

THAT was easy! Almost plug and play. I made a ground wire harness and wired both terminals of the Hellas is the only extra work I did.

Damn geese......suckers are just mean. In my youth I was running some irrigation pipe on a hot day, no shirt......I was all hunkered down at one point and one of my geese just comes up, grabs some of my back meat and TWISTS. Holy SHIT!!

Just as a side note, bumping up the fuse size on the stock wiring typically is bad practice. OEM wiring and fusing is usually sized to fit the circuit and not allow too much else. A few amps probably not a big deal on something momentary like a horn, but you never know.

FTR This install did not involve this. I assume your comment is directed at the poster who kept his OEM. horns and piggy backed the Hellas. That would be one cacophony!

BTW The Hellas are not much louder. Just more euro defined.

Big difference between a couple amps and 10-15 extra, but yes, caution should always be used. Also considering the system has a relay, that’s additional protection.

Not disagreeing, just emphasizing the difference for anyone reading and wants to jump to 30 amps and 16 horns.

The red hella supertones maybe, but the Yellow Hella sharptones are definitely louder (~10db I think). The sharptones are a dif freq than the oem ones as I recall too, and the mule deer around here HATE it when I honk at them. With the factory horn, they would just look at me and chew their cud.

    NOW you tell me.........:D:D:thumbsup:

    Interesting RED = 118dB and Yellow = 115dB

Red supertone - High tone: 500 Hz - Low tone: 300 Hz - Sound level: 118 dB

Yellow high tone High tone: 415 Hz - Low tone: 350 Hz - Sound level: 115 dB

Depending on wire gauge, 3-5 amps could potentially matter, especially when OEM wiring in some applications is pushing the limits, especially on the light amperage accessories using small wire, like 18 gauge.

In this case I agree it shouldn’t cause any issues given it’s a momentary device on a relayed circuit. A relay however is not a fail safe from an improperly fused circuit, just isolates the circuit when not in use.

Looks like the Hella Super Tone Kit (RED) is only 66 watts (5.5 amps). Even the individual Sharp Tone Horn (YELLOW) is only 44 watts (only 7.33 amps if you install 2). Interesting that a single Universal Disc Horn (SILVER) is 66 watts by itself. If someone tried to install 2 of these, the total would be 11 amps (exceeding the OE 10 amp circuit limit).

Agreed. One good thing about the horns is you can actually see the wire so you can determine guage.

I can make an educated guess. But, unless I can find the markings, it's really hard to get it correct with all the different types of insulation on the market.
